HRH in Modular Homes

A nice job in a modular this past summer. The HO ordered it with no HVAC except floor boots and registers. This was for the ducted A/C we installed.

The system was as follows: Radiant slab in the basement, radiant slab in the garage, panel rads on the main level, Buderus atmospheric draft 124 series LP gas fired boiler with 2107 control providing constant circ to the panels. Buderus indirect DHW tank. An American standard 2.5 ton A/C condenser pumping through an Enerzone air handler and custom ductwork does the cooling.

I told the HO he had a kind of plain vanilla radiant system. They absolutely LOVE the heating system. He says it feels just like the wood stove in their old house. The heat is on all the time, only it doesn't overheat and then cool off like the wood stove did. "It's so comfortable upstairs and down". Says the Mrs. "And it doesn't make any noise at all!"

I should take some pics of this job and post them here. We had never done quite that combination of equipment b4 and it turned out really well.

Rob, it's your money. Tell them how you want it set up and make them do it or walk away.

    Heating Modular Homes

Does anyone know of any modular home manufacturers which offer hydronic radiant heat as an option? I'm told that some offer hot water baseboard heat, or some that come with no heating system installed. We are looking into modular homes in Maine to supply the affordable housing market with some options in the mid-coast region. We may have to get one with no system and install HRH ourselves.

    I'm \"trailer trash\", which is how

I got into HVAC/R, hydronic heating.

BOCA homes? Frames and wheels? What?

I have a very well built, as it came off the assembly line, home (they took out the woods, the dogs) between me and lake erie. Came with, preinstalled ductwork that was over sized. connect the dots electrical and plumbing. I bid then passed on the job because of the banker not the builder.

The nature of the beast requires "an easy touch", as plumbing in general, does not like to bounce up and down the interstate at 70mph.

All you wish can come true, look at DISNEY, we need more input.

    We did

a radiant system in a modular about a year ago. The modular company was not very cooperative with the home owner.

At one point she wanted us to go to the factory and install the tubing while the home was being built. That was not an option. Then she wanted me to have my guys install the tubing when the house was delivered but before it was set in place. She wondered if we could install the tubing while the sections were hanging from a crane!!! NOT!!

We ended up getting a gypcrete contractor to pour the second floor and we did a staple up on the first.

The modular company did not allow for the extra 1.5" of gypcrete when the plumbing fixtures were roughed so some modifications had to be made.

The homeowners spent a weekend sealing every joint they could find and we protected the painted walls with plastic. The gypcrete guys did a fantastic job and no damage occured.

I do not know of any modular home company that offers radiant heat as an option.

    Hope this helps!

    My niece

and her husband have a modular on order with baseboard. I have offered to help with the P & H. This will be the first I've done and am very curious what is in store.

I couldn't say no to "little" Kelly so I will be out of retirement for one more.

    Modulars

Most new homes around here are modulars. Most come with baseboard. There are a few coming thru with a set up just like Steve mentioned. I think there are quite a few with baseboard in the home and radiant basements.

    I know...

for sure that Oxford Homes in Maine offers it. There is a dealer here in Seacoast NH that has it in his model. They used 3/8"Wirsbo with the new style plates. overall looked like a pretty good job...boiler/ piping could have been a bit more up to date. but that was at the site. Manifolds were done at the factory and in a closet. Homeowner opted for the baseboard instead...no$$$. kpc

    What the?

    Define "affordable housing market" please.
  • Kanbuild

will put what ever you want in as your heating system. Kind of a long way from Colorado to Maine however. I'd also suggest that you pour the gyp or lite weight when you get it set in place.

Affordable Housing Market? In this part of Maine wealthy out of state buyers are forcing the prices out of reach of the local working class resident. This region is a choice area for retiring baby boomers, yet the people who work in the health care industry which is one of the fastest growing sectors of the Maine economy can't find affordable housing. There is a strong market for "affordable housing".

    Thanks

Very much. I wrote to Oxford Homes on Friday, but have not heard back yet. I like their product line very much. This is good news!
