Did you guys ever try using never-seize compound for pipe dope? Works better than tape/dope. Put together a 450 Mills boiler 15 years ago with the stuff and had to change out a section this year.....easy as pie! Just make sure the stuff is rated to be used in that application. We used to use it all the time in the paper mill. Coat gaskets and union halves with the stuff too. Makes maintenance a whole lot easier.

    cast iron fittings

hello all. can't remember the actual reason for using the cast iron fittings on a steam system. the "old guy" who taught me really may have never really told me. back then he told us stuff on a need to know basis. i am pricing out a steam job and my supplier does not stock cast. he asked me why not black? the only response i had was because it is not correct in steam. the only answer i know is you can break the fittings out if need be, maybe for expansion also? figured you guys would like this. what kind of answers do we have out there?
  • You got it already

You can break it out. Both work fine, and cast is the weaker of the two.

Are you ever going to be the guy that takes it apart?

    hope not

i doubt i would ever take it apart but it is a good option. tough to get apart those old steam pipes.

    If You...

...put it together with Teflon tape/dope, it'll almost always come apart. In the pre-Teflon tape days, the old timers used a lot of recipes for mixing their own dope that hardened up like concrete, as I'm sure you've noticed.

    never seize

have been using neverseize on all tankless gaskets for so long it has paid off on a few occasions. I never knew though, if it was compatible with the gasket material. I never had a negative service experience as a result. On the few tankless heaters which had to be removed, it certainly proved to be a DEFINATE advantage with regard to the whole process of removing the bolts to ease of gasket removal.

    C.I. fittings

I have always understood that "back in the day" cast iron fittings were less expensive and that is why they are used on steam.
