I have been told that it is the law in the state of new york that on all direct fired water heaters, indirect and tankless coils you must install a tempering valve. Is
this true,I have not been able to get a straight answer.Personally I have been installing them for past couple of years but two boiler inspectors in nyc one said I had to and one said no.Can anyone tell me the law please. Thanks in advance

    The code-NYS

Joe, I went to my local inspector's office and read the codebook myself. The only thing we saw was that a Water Heater used for COMBINATION heat and hot water(like the Bock system or heatpump helpers) must have one. I guess they assume that you would have 180 degrees for heating. That is all I saw after about 30 minutes of searching the different books. So, I would say no. But, that said, I think it would be a good thing to put on anyway.
  • use thermostatic mixing valves

i use sparco and they deliver a more even water temp. and a safe high water temp. bob

  • Hot water temperature.

You need to make sure that the hot water to a faucet does not exceed 125 degrees and a constant supply of no less than 115 degrees is met.

Any system that produces hot water by steam or emersion in a boiler or other device should hasve a mixing or tempering valve.

If a person gets scalded and you are the contractor that did not provide for the control of the hot water you will learn a new game of tag. Its called tag your it.
