I just finished a project last season and I am experiencing a problem that once the heat goes on there is a lot of noise and loud banging. It seams to be due to an expansion in the heating lines.
The following is the building information:
·Cellar and six (6) stories
·Each story has two (2) apartment
·Each apartment has two (2) zones
·Each zone has a 1¼”supply and 1¼” return
·Each floor height is 11 ft.
·Radiators connections are from under floor
·Risers has on each floor one (1) kindoff rod with kindoff clips to hold the pipes firm, and not shaking
·All pipes hang under floor under the kindorf not on top
·All boilers are in the cellar
Please try to help me with the above banging problem, and feel free to email or call me if you have any questions in reference to the above. I thank you for taking your time to read this and I sure hope that some of you out there will be able to shed somelight on this issue

Best Regards,
Abe Deutsch

    Expansion Tank/PSV?

A PSV discharging will bang piping very loud. With 66 feet static head you are at minimum 28-29 psi. Do you have 30 psi relief??

    Banging noise

    Abe,

    A few questions:

    1) What type system - I'm thinking circulated HW with the 1 1/4" supply and returns, but could it be steam?

    2) Are the lines copper or black pipe?

    3) Not familliar with your terms "kindorf" / "kindoff" - I'm assuming these are a type of pipe hanger - can you elaborate?

    4) You say you finiished the project resently, did you do a complete install or a boiler retrofit? If complete install, how did you run the risers, in terms of the openings you passed the line through? Specifically, what size holes for the 1 1/4" lines?

    5) If your able to post a few pictures, it would be a big help. Some of the boiler room, and some of the pipe runs.

    Look forward to your posts.
