Your favorite thing about the wall?

I have to say the people I have met in the last year plus on the wall. I have read from many people that have not only taught me to be a better tech, but a better person. I can honestly say that I have learned as much in the last year from fellow wallies and from Dan's books,(which I am sill working my way thru), than I have learned in my past 10 years as a technician, including some things that I was taught the wrong way, and now know the right way and WHY it's the right way. The wallies have taught me alot, and certainly have made me laugh along the way.

Seems we come from all over, are of many ages and are doing this for a multitude of reasons. Why do you enjoy this place?

    Community

In the truest sense of the word.

When you consider that the common ground is merely using water in some form as a heat transfer medium this place is pretty amazing.

Professionals (both union & non-union); homeowners (seeking both advice on new/solutions for old); DIYers (for MANY reasons); tinkerers (both in the trade and of the DIY fashion): all seem to co-exist and even respect the opinions of others!

Add to that mix the many, many different ways to work with hydronics and the many, many different attitudes of the many people writing and the sense of community seems genuinely remarkable.

Rarely is there a less-than-civil response--even to a no-so-civil remark. It seems to me that people here learn about more things than just hydronics...

Perhaps politicians and diplomats would be well-advised to learn to do the same: find a simple common ground and acknowledge that there are many, many valid ways to achieve a goal.

(I tend to get pretty "deep" when doing things like skimcoat drywall and brush enameling.)

From a DIY and a homeowner point of view (I'm a carpenter). The wall has been a wealth of info. everyone here is great. What started me coming here is I purchased my grandparents home built in 1952.It has radiant ceiling heat and in floor. So being new to the radiant world I decided to do my own research on how the system works and component function. They had the boiler replaced in 1993 From what I have read on here and the radiant panel site the install was subpar, there are some issues I need to deal with when the heating season ends boiler condensation, flue condensation, circulator is on the return side of boiler no low water cut off sensor he even forgot to hook up a loop in the living room ceiling he just capped it. It drove me nuts, what in the hell does this pipe do theres no bathroom in the living room, so I did some detective work and I hooked it back up what a difference in that room. No wonder why gram always complained that the new boiler was not as good as the old one. You know whats funny though the system works beautifully inspite of these little imperfections. This site has helped me to realize problems and nip potential problems with my system in the butt. Thank god those radiant guys who did the piping install in this house knew what they were doing I'm not 100% sure if they could be classified as "Deadmen" yet:-) Of course it takes the initiative and interest of the homeowner to research the system and it helps to have an informational data base as this place. For with out this site and others I would have probably never realized my heating system was not running at its full potential and I would'nt of even know it. (thought it was supposed to do that)MY HATES OFF TO THE WET HEADS AND THE WALL. FOREVER LIQUID SUNSHINE HAS CONVERTED ME! SCORCHED AIR SUCKS!:-)

To sum it up in short statement I would say it's the people that frequent this site and their willingness to openly share their knowledge with each other. Not to mention almost everyone treats each other like family. a family I'm grateful to be a part of.

Special Thanks to our host Dan Holoan, For providing us with this home for our cyber family to exist.

    Your friend in the industry,

    Real People

My wife keeps saying "Are you on that plumbing site again? Your food is cold!"

I'm really not sure why, but I can't stay away.

The more I learn about hydronics and steam, the more I want to learn. Some of the humor you guys use here just about knocks me out of my chair too :-P, Not to mention that everyone here seems to have both feet planted firmly in the real world.

    Gotta run....DDDDDIIINNNNNNNEEEEEERRRR!!!!!!

    Think Think Think

These people are the best and brightest at what they do. I am always wishing I had thought of their ideas. Real "outside of the box thinking" alot of times. I can glean 20 minutes of information out of a post that takes 10 minutes to read.

    I'm with

    Steamhead here.

I have learned so much since I started coming to "The Wall".

I send my customers here to "hold my feet to the fire" on anything I tell them.

You all are the best in the industry and I am grateful that Dan Holohan had the idea and the drive to see this through.

    Sincerely,

Used to hang around sites like....

sixguns.com and sixgunner.com. Good info but some of the participants are a little "off the wall" (no pun intended). Then my wife decided that we would buy an older home with a steam system, basically to give me something to do other than polish my single actions. This site has been a Godsend, literally.

    The Wall \"Giving and Dedication\"

If you ever need a question answered, in regards to hydronic
heating, this is the place to be. There are so many talented
people who really know the business, such as Hotrod, Dave
Yates, and Mark E.,just to name a few, who give so much of their time to promote this industry. The "Wall" has it all.
I am just amazed, everytime I see a beautiful work of art
displayed, such as, one of "heatboy's" projects. There is
so much to see and so much to learn and if you hang around
the "Wall", you will also get for free, some of Dan Holohan's humor.

As stated many times above, its the ammount of information people are willing to give, the interest in what we do and wanting to help others. 75% of what I pick up from others I get just by reading the posts and the answers given.

  • Learning and teaching

are both passions I get to persue freely on The Wall. If I'm not teaching, I'm learning, and vice versa.

Thanks Mr. and Mrs. Holohan for making it possible, and thanks to EVERYONE else for making it work.

    The Wall

Dan and The Wall (all those wallies) are a national HVAC treasure. I'm nominating him and it for a spot in the Smithsonian, right next to that big, silent running steam engine.

I mostly browse The Wall, and always find something valuable on each visit.

    Knowledge.

People!!! Genuine, real and caring! Prayed for each other, cried with each other and celebrate eachs accomplishments with true joy.

Living in the middle of nowhere and yet involved with something big(course the way I see it I'm not really in nowhere). I've lived in big cities and smaller towns and don't want to trade this place.

    You'all should come visit sometime.

    Thank you Dan!!!

While there have been a couple of notable exceptions

I've been impressed with the kindness and understanding exhibited by wallies. It's refreshing to encounter folks who know their stuff and don't feel threatened by sharing their knowledge.

    The sharing

I find the fact that you folks are willing to talk to homeowners, offer suggestions or teach is the reason I enjoy reading the Wall.

My boiler sometimes wonders where I've learned so much, but we help to keep him busy.

    Thanx!
