water heater anode rod

i got a com water heater and opened the cleanout to clean it and saw about 3 inches of calcium build up on the rod, do you think its time to replace the rods?

That probably not calcium...
its probably the byproducts of corrosion that are coming from the anode rod. The rod is doing exactly what its supposed to be doing, which is deteriorating. It's a "sacrificial" anode. Its being sacrificed for the exposed mild steel in the tank. As soon as it is exhausted, the oxygen turns to consume the next available metal, which is usually your tank.
Replace it as cheap insurance.
Calcium generally comes out of suspension on a heated or cooled surface.

make sure the hot and cold water lines are electrically grounded. How did the inside of the tank look? does the water smell?0
