cast iron radiators

my house has the old column type cast iron radiators. they are made by the american radiator co. and they also say peerless on them so i'm guessing peerless owns or is part of amer. rad. co.. anyways, one of the valves on the radiator is leaking from the packing. tightening will not stop it. does anyone know if these valves have rebuild kits still made. i have a newer valve which will probably work but would like to keep the original and save the headache of trying to get the old one out. thanks

Jason , go to a plumbing
supply house and ask for some small packing rope, them remove raditor handle and packing nut,dig out old packing and replace with new, put packing nut back on but DON'T over tighten you may have to tighten some more later when system is on and making steam ( just tighten until leak ) stops. Hope this helps John@Reliable0 -
Valve packing
Since these are old fashioned valves, I just did it the old fashioned way. Ace Hardware has Faucet Packing Graphite which is a graphite impregnated rope. Just back off the packing nut, wrap some around the stem and tighten it down just enough to stop the leak (so you can tighten it more later if needed).0
