    Termites

Have read in many places that the baiting system is VERY good. Balsa strips (termites love them) are placed in underground containers to attract them. When found actively feeding the plain balsa is replaced with wood impregnated with a systemic poison that kills the colony itself. There are DIY kits available, but unless things have changed the consumer poison is not as effective as what's available to pest control firms.

Supposedly much better than the traditional chemical "shield" around the perimeter and about the only method that has a prayer against the Formosan "terrormites" that continue to move North. They've even been known to chew through lead termite shields by the way.

You might want to recommend this system to your radiant slab-on-grade customers in particular. Make sure they use an established firm with a good reputation. The baiting MUST be followed up with the poison if the little buggers are found--a new firm around here (and one established firm even) just set the bait and never followed up--but, of course they charged for the follow-up as well... The vigilant called the established firm and got results, but the new one had gone belly up.

    I heard this too.

One problem with the baiting system is I don't think the insurance companies are convinced. When I was faced with termites a couple years ago (turned out to be winged ants but what the hell do I know about bugs) my insurance company was requiring me to put in the foundation sealer as a condition of keeping me insured.

Say Mike, where can you get

the homeowner baiting systems. I remember seeing them, but dont't remember how to get them. Thanks from here in termite country, Illinois.

Some do question whether the process in general or chitin inhibitors in particular will work.
