    broadband

Other choices for higher speed connectivity include DSL, fixed wireless and satellite.

    Cable Internet is nice

but so is DSL. Of course, one broadband service or the other may not be available in your area. In Baltimore, we can get DSL Internet but not cable at this time. There's no fixed wireless that I know of. Verizon's DSL has a pretty good up-time and they do a good job fixing whatever problems do come up. I still keep a 56k modem as a backup though.

Any other Wallsters have broadband? What experience have you had?

    I've been

on Verizon for a couple of years now. One problem with e-mail but someone spent an hour on the phone with me and took care of it. I like that fact that you can shut it off where I've heard cable is always on when the computer is on. They are equally as fast according to my two girls on cable.

    my experiences

We're fortunate to have all 4 available here.

Verizon is the local telco and the only DSL transport provider. There are two ISPs that use that transport, Verizon Online and Stargate. I started with 90k/640k DSL from Verizon Online, switched to Stargate. System upgrade bumped transport to 128k/768k and I recently upgraded service to 384k/1.5M (for extra $)

At it's best, cable modem service from Adelphia is really fast (I've seen downloads at 3Mb/sec), but quickly bogs down in the evenings. My Dad's service can be as slow as dial-up at times. They also do a lot of port blocking under the guise of "safety".

DirecWay satellite service is OK if you don't have any other choice. Very high latency. They play games using caching proxy servers and spoofing TCP acknowlegments to minimize the effects - which I don't think is a good thing.

Fixed wireless (using Navini ripwave stuff) just became available. Only 512k down, upload cap seems to float. They also port block, and experience bursts of packet loss.

My DSL may not be the fastest, but it's consistent and gives me an open, unencumbered pipe.

    cable

I have had cable for about three years now with speeds around 128/2.7 but if you really want to fly w/ cable max out your memory ram, memory is so cheap now... I dropped in two 512's on top of the 256 in there...zoom zoom zoom.

    I agree -

more memory more zoom zoom. We've been on cable for about 6 years now. I'm a home office so the house is networked through DLink and then substantial firewalls are there too. Without the extra protection of the router and the firewall - unsolicited problems kept cropping up. It is my thinking that as we get faster - the security diminishes - it's a bargain to buy extra security via software.
  • Hooked on cable.

I occasionally have to resort back to the land line if I'm on the road. Boy, did I waste a lot of time or what!!

    Go cable, GO FAST!
