Rotted cast iron baseboard

Called to a job today. Monoflo system w/ 3/4" cast iron baseboard throughout the house. In the living room, there is one section of the baseboard which has 4 quarter sized rot spots(all within a 8" diameter)on the front, NOT between the sects. They all leak,(the rot spots) but one leak is severe enough to have had water run across a carpeted floor and now appears on the outside cement foundation in the form of a small iceberg. The leaking section is in the middle of the run. Has anyone ever seen this type of failure? because I havent in 23 years field work. First, is it within reason to assume that the baseboard can be pulled apart up to the point of repair, add a new section(which the customer happens to have)and put it back together without much of a problem? And,second, if so,where can I find the push nipples and the tool to do it. Local suppliers are giving me the runaround and want me to rip out and put in fin tube which the customer really does not want. Little help here would be nice. Thanks in advance.

    Try another supplier.

You probably already know this, but do not mix CI with copper. The heat output and retention are totally different and the system may not work properly.

If it's burnham or slant fin the push nipples should be easily obtainable. If it's an oddball you might do just as well to replace the whole assembly. I would imagine getting it apart without damage is much harder than reassembling with new push nips. Never saw one fail like that. Bad casting?

For that age, I wouldn't try it unless the customer agreed to pay me whether it worked or not. I would simply order a new piece for the room and go with it.

    I wonder what the boiler

temps. have been running at and the ph of the water itself.

I have had to seperate sections before and it hasn't been a problem.

I've always used Burnham CI BB and have never, ever had a problem.

Check the two things mentioned above before you do anything and you might avoid further problems.
