Pex lines noisy

Guys:

Got a job with all Pex tube throughout a very large home. The complaint is noise from expansion/contraction.
Will expansion joints at the boilers help with this?
The tubing is under floors, up inside walls, etc.
Never had this complaint before. Any ideas???

John

Would you please tell us a little more about the system? Maybe some pictures.

Is it injection or mixing valves? what size pumps?

    Noise

Do you have any re-set on the system ? The large temperature swings really make this a problem. Constant circ. Helps eliminate this also.

Years ago I had a problem with this and added expansion loops to the pex before the risers in the basemant, it helped take up Some of the expansion.

Pex-al-pex is the way to go.

    Pex noise

Years ago I had that problem on a clip-up system.Ended up being the clips I was using.Check to make sure they're compatible. Also check if the lines are bundled together to tight.

    Good Luck

  • "very large home" makes me think perhaps your loops are a lot longer than normal perhaps? That would explain why you might see it here and not on other jobs. For long runs in dry installations I usually try to break them up into two separate loops. A bit more work on the install but more expansion is taken up by more loops! 1.1"/100feet/10deg delta T adds up fast when you have 50 foot straight shots down a long joist bay.

As someone else noted, reset control can help this a lot if you don't already have it.

    Pex noise

    Guys:
This is a Pex system, using Mixing valves, and fairly tight bundles of 1" supply, runs are about 40 to 50 feet before they go up into the walls of this monster 2 million dollar house. Has a snow melt also, all (6) patios.
Don't know the Circulator sizes at this time.
Have not spent enough time to check everything out yet.
I just wondered if Expansion joints would help stop the noise. (Has outdoor reset also) Customer installed most of the tubing himself. (Nightmare) John

    pex noise

I discovered the hard way that barrier pex tubes when rubbing against each other can make a good deal of noise. If your tube is barrier style, this could have a lot to do with the problem.
