If you had choice for location...

You can dream all you want, but there's still no place like home. It doesn't get much nicer that the coast of Maine...even with it's chilly winters....

Success of telling us where you're from

Okay, if you could choose another place to live/work (no fair saying you'd stay where you are), where would it be and why?

My first choice would be Austin, Texas, high above the city in the mountains on the west side -- God's country.

    Fair or not, John..............

I would opt to stay right here in the Lovely Lehigh Valley, PA. I have spent the last 11 years trying to build a reputation and my business in this area. I don't have the energy to go through all of the hard times again.

That being said, I would opt for Colorado. It seems there is a lot of great radiant going on there and they have 4(?) seasons which I could not live without. That is the greatest thing about the Northeast. The 4 distinct seasons. By the way, I'm ready for Spring!.

    John...

My choice would be Quepos, CostaRica. A little outpost in the middle of the west coast of this fine country.

Not a lot of heating work to do there, but some of the best fishing (marlin) in the world. I guess there would be a need for some kind of hotwater service person.

I visited this fine spot a few years back and found a pile of ex-patriated Americans and Canadians living the good life. (Dolce' Vida?) After the last few weeks in the great northeast , I'm ready for somewhere that heat doesn't even come into the equation ! Chris

up in the mountains. A very simple way of life with wonderful loving people who appreciate every little thing you do for them. Sunrise and sunset is a thing to be experienced in Africa.

    Somewhere in the Western

U.S. of A. near the mountains, maybe Colorado, where I could have enough land to have my own "Rink of Dreams" in the winter and my own "Field of Dreams" and "Links of Green" in the summer.

An added benefit to that would be that my Goldens could run wild without worrying about 18 yr. old kids going 190 mph down the street. When I was 18, I always made sure I did on the open highway where there were no Goldens:)

    Where I would Live

I am presently in a town of 5000 in Mass where I grew up. When I was younger I wanted to be in a large town. As I get older I prefer small towns and a slower way of life. That said, I would love the White Mountains area of New Hampshire.

Why can't we stay where we are?

I do live in paradise - San Diego - Do you remember the weather at the Superbowl? Unfortunately this isn't a great place for radiant - unless you're talking about bathroom floor and towel warming. With that being said, I would prefer to be working in Northern California - hey Alan, you hiring :) - because they have a better market for radinat. Besides they also have all the water we "Southerners" need and are getting a little tired of giving it to us. As a 4th generation Californian, I see this State as the only place that has "everything" (beaches, mountains, desert). I know this place seems "off its rocker" to alot of you. I remember how much "better" it was when I was growing up, the stories of how "better" it was was when my parents and their parents were growing up, but I also know "there's no place like home".

If I could afford it! Jackson Hole, Wy. Ski & Fly fish the rest of my life away. Have yet to find the trust fund to allow me to do this full time. I'll settle for weekends in the White Mtns of NH with family, skiing & fishing as much as I can.

    High and dry!

I'd choose NE New Mexico, around Santa Fe if I could afford it. Four seasons, but mild ones, low humidity and LOTS of sunshine! As an added bonus; Radiant is very popular there.

1000 islands area in northern NY

If money was no object I would own me an island and a boat and maybe a pontoon plane. Life would be good. Actually life is good without these things. oh well!

Well, I love living in Baltimore

but I'll second the White Mountain NH area, or the Maine coast- maybe buy one of those big old houses but it would have to have steam heat!

Or Montana, Idaho or the Dakotas where I could introduce steam! "Hey, how would you like to have a system that feels as nice as having a wood stove in every room, and will never freeze, and can run without electricity (as soon as my friend Noel comes up with a way to power a probe LWCO from a powerpile)?

    Oh yeah Troy

My Family is originally from that area. Very nice in the Summer. Winters very long. I would love to move to the adirondacks in Upstate NY. I go there every Summr and would love to have a cabin on a remote Lake to Winter over in. Of course I would have to have a transporter beam to take my wife to a beach somewhere now and then. She's from Jersey and grew up at the beach. Did yu hear the one about the hurricaine that hit the coast of New Jersey and inflicted 11 million dollars worth of improvements. (everywhere except Cape May of course Dano)

    For...

...natural beauty: Pocahontas, Arkansas (extreme NE). Incredible country & wildlife; lots of natural, pure, constant temp springs for geothermal. Downside: even more backward than Swampeast Missouri.

...climate: San Diego, CA. Downside: WAY too many people and WAY too expensive.

...simple life: Central Egypt on "Banana Island." Very nice people, incredible culture and I tan well. Downside: Arabic is a REALLY rough language to learn and being a spoiled American it would be kind of rough to live THAT simply...

...sensual pleasure: New Orleans, LA. Easy going, friendly with great food. Downside: brutal summers and "too much of a nice thing..."

...excitement: New York City. Always something to do to please anyone, anytime. Downside: don't care for the accent and am a country boy at heart.

...reflection & study: South Dakota back country. Downside: would want a private jet to "escape" the reflection and study lest I go completly wacky.

...humor: Boulder, Colorado. That location was CAREFULLY chosen for "Mork" of "Mork & Mindy." Believe me, nobody would notice him as unusual... Downside: they're REALLY strange--the "Boulder Planet" newspaper is also known as "Planet Boulder."

...retirement: A modest motorhome pulling a compact car and only the climate to drive my movement. Actually quite energy efficient if you sell your home, use solar, take short showers and stay put for a few months at a time. Downside: Books are awfully heavy and my tendency to collect stuff...

...pennance: an "exclusive" subdivision where I'm surrounded by clones and McMansions.

That pint is going be extra cold! It's going to be mighty cold and damp in that cottage with no electric. Unless you're planning to heat the place with peat turf.

The "Quiet" part of the Carribean.

My wife lived there for a year working for Trans World Radio. Quiet lifestyle ... biking, hiking, scuba diving ...

There is nothing like stepping out of the ocean onto your back patio, and having a cup of hot coffee waiting.

    Dry peat

The only trouble is that the bloody peat will never dry what with all the rain. The west coast is not the most hospitable of places.

    Bucolic

A word that best describes Inistioge - a small village 15 miles or so from where I grew up. A seven arch stone bridge spans the river Nore leading to the village square. Ten minutes or so to one of the finest parklands golf courses to be found - Mt. Juliet. Idyllic might better describe this place that would inspire even the most mediocre of writers.

Beautiful spot - positively bucolic. About 15 miles from where I grew up, this picture perfect village is on the Nore river within 15 minutes of one of the finest parklands golf courses you will find - Mt. Juliet.

I could give up hydronics for that place. Start a tour bus guide/snorkeling company.

here in California. Lots of Abalone (limit:2), a banana belt microclimate, plenty of organic farming, Douglas Fir, Pine, plenty of Redwoods and not that many people.

Heatermon: C'mon up and set a' spell if you're in the area.

Timmie: I was born in Zimbabwe (Harare) and you are right, it's beautiful. Too bad politics and AIDS has changed it.

Sorry guys, but its gotta be the beach for me.Any one will do. Currently when its time to unwind, the Jersey shore is the place. Point Pleasant is where I hang my 24"(wrench that is). Fishing, surfing, seafood, boat drinks, and bikinis. What could possibly be better. Maybe a trip to Wetstock would be close(Sans bikinis). To each his/her own. Keep dreaming gang...retirement is coming. Haven't been that far up North in years

Spent some time in Morrow Bay and S.L.O. though. My Mom's family moved down here from Coos Bay in the late 1800's. Anywhere you go on the this coastline is beautiful - as long as there aren't too many people.
