Replacement pipe design

For this I would recommend primary/secondary and zone with circulators.

If the iron is o.k. then leave it be, just flush and clean everything thoroughly when you're done.

When copper touches iron it is a no-no. Dialectric transitions are code in my area, but seldom used.

Design of replacement hot water pipes

I have a 2 family building with a gas hot water boiler and large black iron pipes that were designed for gravity circulation, although a pump has been added. I want to replace them to make space and to seperate the two apartments into zones.
Can someone recommend a reference for designing the new circuits? Also, I'm debating whether to use black iron or copper. If I do use copper, should I use dielectric unions to connect to the 2nd floor black iron risers?
    Thanks
