Thanks to the suggestion in one of the threads that Chapter 18 - ASHRAE Handbook was a good read - I just finished downloading it - and yes - read the whole article. (I'll fess up - I skipped the coal section) This is one darn good read for anyone that wants to completely understand combustion. Some of the formulas (formulii?) sparked a quick flashback to my technical college days - regardless - this chapter should be in everyone's reference material - especially if you are involved in the setup of large gas burners.
