Why do you use iron pipe

I invariably see most posted pictures that have all near boiler piping done in black iron then convert over to copper. Do you use it because of it's ridgitity and self supporting charictoristics? or what?
Thanks

excactly
Eric. Makes a good solid foundation for the circ's, flochecks, x-tanks, etc. All the stuff adds up in weight.

I like the fact that the steel pipes expansion rate is closer to the boilers cast iron than copper.

Why use iron pipe
Iron seems to have less of a tendency to transmit sound than copper. There are some that will swear up 'n down that if the first ten feet of pipe on the supply and return are made of iron that the boiler 'runs-quieter'. I got into the habit of piping that way in the early sixties. It's real subjective; some people can hear better 'n others. There was an error rendering this rich post.

One thing not to do...
is use that iron pipe to support your equipment off the boiler. I see this all the time...Makes boiler replacement alot more expensive and, if you read the installation manual for many boilers, will void the boiler warranty. All that extra weight on the boiler castings cause stress they were not designed for.....Probably could get away with it with those old 2,000 lb residential boilers, but not with the new 300 lb castings.
