  • Explosion caused by a back draft

which is a build up of Carbon Monoxide and Hydrogen caused by incomplete combustion typical to a fire. The CO and Hydrogen reach explosive limits for CO any where between 12.5% and 74%. Three things needed for combustion oxygen-source of igniton-and fuel, the fuel in this case is Carbon Monoxide gas. many explosions at fires that get blamed on natural gas are actually CO explosions.

The movie "Backdraft" was a good example of this.

The flame will actually moan and talk to you in a burning building as the gases build up they make noises.

I learned this in fire fighting school in the Navy. Had it reinforced at Hopkinton, Mass firefighting school.

    Newspaper archives?

Would any archives be available? Should be interesting reading.
