Why is it your not allowed to use teflon tape on gas piping?

OK to use in our jurisdictions (SF Bay Area), but I can see that some people might be concerned with tape fragments clogging gas valves and preventing them from closing all the way.

here in maine we cannot use the tape due to possible clogging of gas valves, another concern is teflon tape is not a great product to use with cast fittings its been known to make them crack,an example would be trane will not warrentee cracked coil manifolds [coils with cast manifolds]were teflon tape has been used, in fact they now tag there coils labled as such

there is a specific teflon
tape for use on gas piping...its yellow, and rather pricey. i tried some and its okay..i found that i liked the old fashioned pipe dope best...ones is supposed to keep the teflon tape off the first thread when useing it for gas.0
