More than a handfull of steam problems

I have been doing HVAC Commerical repair work for the last twenty years. Some times you can't see the forest for the trees. Any input will be helpful. I was asked to look at a very close freind's heating system in a house he just purchased.
History,
This is a two pipe steam system, with main vents on both mains in basement, with seven convectors, with air vents installed. There is no traps on this system. Circa 1947. The boiler was replaced some time in 1997, with a W/M SGO 3. Problems were and are burner short cycling, uneven heat. I downloaded W/M specs on this boiler, there are two problems that I notice at the boiler near piping.
