Boiler Loses Too Much Water

I have a boiler at my house, its the regular old style radiators, steam. I am pretty knowledgeable about most things around the house, but I am not sure about this boiler. It has worked great in the past, but this winter it has been a pain. It does not maintain its water level for more than a day. The biggest pain about it is, I rent the house, so every day I have to go there to put some water in the system. I have checked all the radiators and have looked at most of the pipes since luckily the apartment is on the first floor, and everything seems pretty good. There is just one union that drips every now and then, could that be it???? If you have any suggestions/comments PLEASE EMAIL ME, I am always up to talk about any home improvement.

  • It could be something as simple

as bad vents . I went to a call the other day where the lady of the house had to add water once a day . Found a radiator vent and a main vent hissing out steam . Changed them both and she hasnt added water in a week so far .

Or it could be a leaking return pipe . Do your pipes go in the floor somewhere ?

Or it could be a leak in the boiler itself - any white smoke coming out of the chimney ?

    water level

Sounds like the recent problem I just had, gas company checked system and found cracked boiler. Serviceman raised water level in sight glass to top and water spilled out back of boiler, seems steam was evaporating out back of system in boiler and flowing out chimmey stack without my knowledge. So if you cannot find leak at radiators I would inspect boiler for crack, it cost me a new furnace.
