Explanation for Relationship Between The Wall and Klez Worm

    Hi Everyone,

I'm an Internet Consultant lurking on your message board. Please do not blame Dan or his Web server for the virus problems you've been experiencing. The most likely explanation as to why you see an increase in virus activity after visiting The Wall has to do with the way the virus works. It collects e-mail addresses from the computer of the person who gets infected by it. It scans many types of files on the infected computer in order to retrieve e-mail addresses, including recently visited Web pages. When anyone visits this site (or any other site where you may post your e-mail address), his/her Web browser stores a copy of the Web page with all of your e-mail addresses on it. If that person's computer gets infected, the virus can collect your e-mail addresses from the browser cache (the place where the Web pages are stored locally) and send copies of itself to you. Therefore, you will not easily find the person (or, more likely, numerous persons) who are sending you the virus. Hope this helps.

    That does help.

I hane Norton anti-virus that updates everyday, is that enough ?

How can someone tell if they have the worm ?

And I don't think anyone is blaming anyone, we're just trying to find an answer. I think we were hopping it might be in the wall and could be cleaned up there. As you put it, everyone has to check thier systems and everyone HAS to have an anti-virus program.

How To Tell If You Have Klez Worm

In most cases, using up-to-date anti-virus software, such as Norton anti-virus will be enough. Be sure not to open any attachments that you were not expecting, even from a friend. Also, be aware that Klez can disable anti-virus software.

The easiest way to see if your computer has been infected is to look in the [Drive Letter]:WINDOWSSystem directory (e.g. C:WINDOWSSystem) for a file named Wink????.exe, where the ??? stands for random characters. Klez can create any characters after the word Wink, so it will be different on each computer it infects.

If you spend a lot of time on the Internet, you may want to install a personal firewall. I usually recommend ZoneAlarm at http://www.zonelabs.com. Most people can get by with the ZoneAlarm free firewall. If you have an always-on Internet connection, cable or DSL, then you may want to purchase the Pro version. The value of the firewall is that it alerts you if any application is trying to access the Internet. Therefore, when Klez uses its built-in mailer to send e-mail from your computer, the firewall will alert you and you can click on "NO" to deny it access to the Internet. That will prevent spreading of the virus and also alert you that your computer is infected. Maybe someday we will be able to develop technology to stop the spread of viruses. For now, we just have to use anti-virus software and be as careful as we can.

    You haven't selected that feature

He's not saying that you are using the email feature.

I believe this is what's happening:

The person to whose post you are replying has used the email feature. That person has set up the feature that sends an email to them if someone replies to their post. The email is sent automatically, but it comes from your email address. If that email cannot be sent, it will reply to you (the person who "sent" the email) that the email you sent was undeliverable.

I've had this happen to me, also. The undeliverable message was to the person that I replied to, with my post as the message.
