Thermocouple frequently replacing

I have a customer that I have replaced the thermocouple 4 times this heating season. I called burnham about it, they said to make sure it's only in the flame 3/8" which I already did. Any sugestions. Thanks Mike

Did you take millivolt readings? If so what did you get for readings?

Did the thermocouples have any evidence of scorching or burning on the leads? If so it could be a combustion problem.

Is there sufficient air for combustion in the room?

Did you take a combustion test on the boiler CO2, O2, draft, flue gas temp and VERY IMPORTANT CARBON MONOXIDE.

The gas flame should envelope the upper 1/2" to 3/8" of the t'couple. The flame should be adjusted as asoft blue flame. The tip should glow dull red not "cherry red." Is the tip burned off if so the flame is adjusted too sharp.

I have a complete Troubleshooting Guide you can purchase that will give you a complete procedure on how to troubleshoot.

    check specs -

Not all thermocouples are created equal. Some produce as little as 20 24 mv - new out of the box - when you need at least 30 in most applications.

    Heavy Duty Thermocouple

Sorry I don't have a part number for you... Have to use them on HB Smith, call whoever carries HB Smith in your area to get you the part, or a lead to where to get it. Problem could be just about anything, but it's a legitimate place to start.

    Huskey (white rogers I believe)

Are the only heavy duty ones that I have seen. Would love to know of any other

    pilot outages

check gas pressure under full load ,just to rule it out, be sure the pilot tubing fitting at the pilot burner is not leaking- honeywell - k-15 pilots , when I thread them in - -just enough to hold- so the thermocouple is heated at the top, threaded all the way and your overheating the thermocouple.don't rule out the gas valve - checking mv outside the boiler and in place , while running ,can tell you alot also.I usually don't run into problems with burnham pilots -other than their big ,usually good for 3-4 years , Last note ,on pilot burner body ,be sure and clean out air hole ,if there is one.

  • Johnson Controls Thermocouples

The "HUSKY" is a K16BT-36. There is a high temperature nickel plated model that works real well in high temperature situations it is a K16RA-36.
  • Husky is Johnson Controls

see my other post for part numbers.
