What you have explained so far is not enough info to give answer. One thing frist it it a pet peeve of mine. You have a boiler.Second please do not start connecting or disconnecting piping or controls of a boiler that you really do not have any idea what they do.Call the fuel co to come out and check the unit for you and explain what each unit does for you.

Is my apartments furnace connected to the upstairs apartment?

I live downstairs. My apartment has a steam furnace. The upstairs apartment has a hot water system. Both furnaces sit in my basement (and vent poorly--another issue). Each furnace appears to be attached to a seperate oil tank--though my tank appears to be the only one that uses a signifigant amount of oil. Anyway, I am deeply suspicious of this system! Sometimes I seem to be unable to control the lower area of my thermostat. Sometimes I will come in and water in my sink will be steaming hot--right from the faucet. I get my hot water from a coil system attached to my furnace. It is a very complicated looking coil......could it be some kind of double coil that also supplies hot water to upstiars apartment??? )There is an electric hotwater heater for the upstairs.....my suspicion is that this "second coil" supplies a loop or zone of hot water heat for the upstars unit. is this possible? Folks upstairs, and landlord, are suspiciously unhelpful. Please help--would be very grateful. This afternoon disconnected, briefly, what was described to me as being my hot water coil and I still got plenty of hot water! Is all of this my imagination? You can tell I am a novice--but any help would be most welcome. Thanks.

This is a small town. Town not sure about set-up other than to say it is complicated. There appears to be two coils on my steam boiler. One gives me hot water. The other appaears to supply a heating loop for the apartment upstairs...looking for an opinion What I meant by this being a small town is that there is no inspection department!

    Confirm suspicions.

If you are really troubled by this you should call a professional to look at it.

Pay for a professional analysis of the system and put your mind to rest.
