L4080B1295 question

I have the feeling that this is a cheap aquastat from honeywell. The supply house that I bought the WH from does not carry a replacement stat, nor do they carry a comparable model.
Assuming that the probe fits the well, could I theoretically pick another model (4006) that would have the same range without any problems? What is the 4006 rated for?

L4080B1295 Question
I have this aquastat mounted on a 7 yr old Crown 30 gal indirect water heater. The heater is currently over-heating the water (according to the set point on the stat). I am finding that the stat is heating about 20 deg over the setting (120=140). I have pulled the well out of the tank and it is clean. The zone valve on the boiler piping is operating correctly. I do not believe that I am getting any ghost flow, since the return pipe to the boiler is room temp when there is no call for heat from the HW heater. If I set the stat to it's lowest setting (no number on the dial), I get about 130 deg water. If I set it to 180, I get 180. What gives with this thing? I found a supply house that can replace it, ($56), but I don't want to replace it unless I know why it is doing this, and that it is bad.
Any help is greatly appreciated. On the plus side, We do have cleaner dishes now.0 -
4080...
are not really acurate. The 4006 version that honeywell makes is much better.0 -
The 4080 series
is an OEM control only I believe. Usually if there is a "B" after the basic number it may be a reverse acting control. The 4006 or 6006 can be used to replace most aquastats. They are both in Honeywell catalog.0 -
overheating
When do you get the high temperatures? When the circulator is on / Off when the burner is On/ Off When the boiler is sitting still?0 -
L4080B1295 Question
I'm not really sure when I get the hight temp. It's always there that I know of. Currently I have the aquastat set to the lowest setting and It's still too hot (130). I check the boiler supply/return pipes whenever I'm nearby and the whole house can be calling for heat, but the zone return line from the WH is cold. So I don't think that there is a problem with the circ or the zone valve, just the aquastat. FYI, this started about 3 months ago. I set the WH to 180 to sanitized some brewing equipment. After the cleaning was done, I turned the stat back to 120. The wife said it was too hot, so I turned it to the lowest setting, still too hot. That's when I got the thermometer out and found that lowest setting was giving me 130 and the 120 setting was giving me 140.0
