I have a 3 - zone, looped Hot water heating system, and one of the zones will only run the pump for about an hour and if it hasnt reached the desired temperature, stop pumping and not start again unless I turn the zone off and then back on.. ANY IDEAS?? I changed the Thermostat 5 times, so I know it is not that, the system has been bled several times and there seems to be no air pockets either..

Zone 1 problems
Hi,
Greetings from NZ, That paradise in the South Pacific,
Sounds like the pump is tired. Does it get hot ? Is there a controller between the thermostat & the pump? Perhaps the pump windings break down after an hour? Does the pump start up immediately after it stops if you switch off/on straight away?
have you checked if there is still power to the pump immediately it stops?
Be interested to hear the solution?0 -
Sounds like
you may have a Indirect fired water heater pump control set up that is wired slightly wrong. If all the zone pumps are wired to the same relay box with separate relays for each pump (the relays ussually look like ice cubes), usually Zone 1 is set up from the factory as a domestic water heating zone with a maximum on time of 1/2 hour if the other zones are calling for heat. Every time you shut off the power the timer resets to zero on zone one. The instructions for the relay box show what terminals need to be jumped to go to standard zone 1 space heating operation. This problem tends to be noticed only when it is colder out. Just made this mistake myself recently.

Thanks... That sounds EXACTLY like my problem... Now if I can find the instructions to set the jumpers!! The original plumber who did the install has been useless and has only tried to find ways to blame the problem on other things in the house rather than fix it.0 -
Thanks.. Wish I was in the south pacific right now... It's 14 F right now in NY!!
They had replaced the pump sometime back with a Heavy Duty model... It kicks in the minute I reset the thermostat.. Sounds like we are onto something with the jumpers mentioned above...0 -
Question.
Whose control is that, Boilerpro? Manufacturer and model?
Sounds like a good thing to know!0 -
The Control unit is a Taco SR503SF-S2.. Taco hasnt been able to help with telling me which jumpers would need to be changed, as this unit seems to be some OEM unit manufactured possibly for Slant-Fin (which is my Boiler model). Slant-Fin has been no help either.. If anyone has any suggestions, it would be GREATLY appreciated. The unit has an AA Override switch set to ON, and 3 jumpers to the right of that, the first 2 are labeled +30 Min. and set, and the last says 30 min delay override and is not set.
ANY IDEAS??0 -
FAX NUMBER
Get me your fax number, I'll fire off a copy of the wiring diagram,
NelsThere was an error rendering this rich post.

I was referring to The B&G ZT series....
But I believe most of the packaged zone pump conrollers have some type of jumper that needs to be added or removed to turn off the DHW timer.

I'm trying to find that info for you right now,
And I just ran into the same thing that you did with the tech at Taco.
He neither recognizes that number, nor the jumper configuration that you have.
I'm still trying, though. I'll be back.

THANKS, Tell me If I am reading this right, I should wire the T - T terminals from Zone 1 to X1 and X2 and set the AA override switch to Off, so that all zones can call for heat equally, with NO priority?? Any help would be great, I am no plumber, or electrician and I do not want to mess this up!!
Thanks.0 -
I'm looking at it like this...
The zone 1 thermostat and circulator are connected to the SR 503 relay as indicated (labeled DHW tank control). The X1 and X2 connect to T and TV on the boiler aquastat relay.
No circulator is connected to the aquastat relay; C1 and C2 are unused in the aquastat.
Switch the switch off.
Call me at 800 873 4346 or 516 484 2610 extension 456 if you need more help.

On the document you faxed to me, page 8, under 1.Gas Boiler application.. I was referring to what it says under "C"..??0 -
me too
TT on the BOILER control connects to X & X.
No thermostats connect to the boiler control.
No circulators connect to the boiler control.
Zone one thermostat connects to zone one T & T where the DHW TANK CONTROL is indicated.

Thanks. I am going to put in a new Slant-fin unit and throw this piece of CR@P out.
