    Cold

I live in North Eastern PA. My house is at 1350' above sea level. The thermometer was below -10 today. It's so cold that the huge woodstove that produces 90 deg heat 8 ft away now only gets up to about 75. Wish I had a block heater for the truck. I'm tired of jumping it every morning.

    Great White North

After a lot of fluffy white stuff, the temps have droped to -29 (not counting wind chill, -42 out in the breeze.

lol - Had a call asking why a boiler was running non-stop & if it meant trouble... I LUV design temps & steady state efficiency !

    Cheers y'all & wear a hat!

of all you guys that live in cold country. Here in the Bay Area, if your heating system packs up, it's a nuisance; there, it's life and death for a lot of people.

All I can say is, well done!

    Enjoying my radiant system

It has been hovering around -30 degrees in Pembroke, Ontario
for the past couple of weeks. My radiant floors sure feel
great. It's also a good time of year to have future customers drop by to see how it works. Oh well, back to the
    dog sled.

    The dog did it

Referring to my earlier post up the line: Our dog decided he couldn't hold it any longer. Problem was, he was still in the kitchen at the time. But I can't get mad at him. I wouldn't want to be out there taking a dump either!

    So cold

The flame froze on my lighter. I put it back in my pocket. The flame thawed out and caught my pants on fire.

We've been non stop for 10 days I can't remember when it last broke 32 I know we haven't been over 20 in a couple weeks. -3 to + 4 every morning with a killer wind last night. Ya, to Alan the guy from California. When the heat goes out here bad things happen very quickly. Lots of freezing, breaking pipes including heat pipes. So you get the boiler going (yippie!!!!!) Only to discover you've got hours of work fixing broken pipes. Ever seen a cast iron rad INSIDE a house freeze?? I've seen them shatter like glass. The worst is people who turn the stat back to save a few bucks only to discover the system froze in the few hours it wasn't running. Bumped out bay windows are really good for this. I've seen the baseboard in such rooms freeze and split. Oh ya, it's been a LONGGGGGGGGGGGG couple weeks. Actually not too bad here, where I go snowmobiling up North they are wondering how much longer before the temp gets up toa balmy 0. 23 bellow the other night and no that's not windchill.

    I am with you Joel

It AMAZE'S me, how many people turn down the thermostate when the weather man says "its down to 5 degrees tonight and the wind chill will .... ".

Alot of them went sking for the weekend and set the whole house down to 55. Save a little fuel, pay us alot more.

Ah, broken cast iron radiators. Ever see a Toilet split in half ? How about a cast iron basboard blow out a dime size whole and then thaw and spew BLACK water about fifteen feet across a white rug.

"Here that son, thats the scream of the wallet-less home owner, coming home from skiing".

    Cold for us

0.0 this morning, 3 yesterday morning, high yesterday about 8. No wind this morning at least, around 25mph yesterday.

Of course the rooftop condensing units at my bar got too cold and tried to compress liquid (I guess). Compressors have electric heat tape but it must have been too cold.

Figured the worst--compressors toast--but put a space heater in the little shed on the roof and they started working fine.

    Up here in western Canada

it's cold, but not as bad as the winter of the blue snow. Got so cold the snow froze and turned blue. About 100 yards south of our farm house a coyote was chasing a rabbit when the cold snap hit - they both froze in mid-air. Come spring the rabbit, being lighter, thawed out first and got a head start.

    Oh Yeah................

well.............I've had a new boiler and chimney liner sitting in my basement for 1.5 years.I knew I would be putting it in any day now:).......so I didnt clean my old stuff for two seasons.

On Sunday morning @ 4AM I got up to stumble in the bathroom.Yep the house smelled like a greyhound bus!!Oh boy.......At 5:30 PM the new was running.

I had a hired a chimney sweep to clean and install the liner. They came and we opened my liner box to see it was ripped:(.He is supplying the material now.

We were also down with no power for 12 hours from Wed. evening to Thurs. morning.I hooked my generator to my boiler and frig. Most people dont have that luxury.Thats the second power outtage this winter.12/26 we were down for 21 hours. But this last one was below zero less the wind.

My hot shot machine kept me out past 11 last night.

Just keep movin' and you won't get cold.

They sell hot water bottles at the drug store. Fill it with hot water and put it under your covers before you climb into bed and you won't be gritting your teeth.

    Hate to brag.... but

Its been a mild winter up here in alaska.

Bad news is snowmaching has been slow... Most rivers not frozen over yet.

    Currently 21 in Anchorage.

Even did some commercial piping modifications over x-mas break at elementary school switched 50' year old radiant loop to variable speed injection... normally taboo.

Crank call of this winter's season?

No heat call the other morning. Steam system. Working just fine upon arrival. "Maybe it's the thermostat", the HO says. It's a programmable unit. Set-back overnight temp setting you ask? 50 degrees F! Good grief. No wonder they thought it wasn't working(G). They'd read somewhere that the heat had to remain completely off for a minimum of 7 hours in order for set-back to have any appreciable cost savings.

    A more extreme example

Went out today to do a Master Venting on a large one-pipe steam system in a former cloak factory. They complained that the building took forever to warm up. While my partner was drilling and tapping the steam mains, I checked out their thermostat setup- figured it must be a bad anticipator setting or something similar.

What I found was two thermostats which were supposedly connected to one of those old Paragon 7-day mechanical timers. As it turned out, the "night" thermostat wasn't even hooked up. The timer was turning the system completely off at night and over the weekend!

I had to reroute some thermostat wires to fix this one. They were lucky their pipes didn't freeze.

    Woodstoves

I've already had one of the classic "fired up the woodstove to save money and heated the thermostat while the baseboards froze in the bedrooms" calls.
