Taco pumps

the pump inside the "box" on that Burnham Revolution is there as a VS mix pump. Not intended, and can't be used for a system pump.

I believe the Weil GV boiler has switched to this VS mix pump in leiu of the 3 way thermostatic formerly used, also. It really works best under the jacket, in this case.

    Taco, Burnham, Weil Mclain

In the last 2 or 3 months I have had to replace 6 Taco 007 circs. on the Burnham Independence. I did none of these jobs but they are piped fine. It's the boiler pump inside the jacket. When I get to these calls the boiler is at temp but the pump is siezed, I believe, due to temperature of the boiler loop as well as the fact that the pump is inside the jacket where the ambiant temp. is pretty high. The pump housings are scorching hot. I can't even touch them. Ive also done 2 on the new Weil GV. These pumps are siezed to the point that I can barely move the impeller with a hammer and screw driver. All of the Burnhams were installed in the fall of 2001. The GV's I don't know about. Has anyone had any conversations about this situation.

    Circulators

I have not had this specific problem, but for the money I like the B&G circulators ALOT more. Even down to the cartridges compared to the 007 wet rotors, it is easy to see the quality difference.

I do not think the design of the independence warrants using the Taco and the operating temperatures inside the jacket are probably beyond a safe range in an extended cold spell.

Personally I think it is a design flaw to have the circulator in the jacket. The manufacturers think they are doing you a favor and making your like easier but in reality......

I believe that you are actually referring to the Burnham Revolution with the internal 007 Taco circulator that we use for variable speed operation. The Independance is a steam boiler but can also be configured for hot water but with the pump outside of the boiler vestibule. We constantly vary the speed of this pump on the Revolution with a variable speed pump control to control flow through the boiler based on different system return water temperatures. We have seen a few of these circulators acting up, especially at reduced speed. Changing just the cartridge and or the motor end did not make things any better in some cases. Changing the whole pump, however, did make a difference. We suspect that the machining of the casting on some of these pumps was a bit too close in tolerance in the impeller area on a batch of pumps from that period. We have had some of these returned and are working with Taco on it.

If you find yourself in a bind on a job without a spare, in most cases you can move the #3 wire going from the VS3000 variable speed pump control over to the #1 position. This will apply full voltage frequency to the pump and will allow it to overcome the resistance it is encountering. You would want to put it back in the original postion afterwards though. We apologize for any difficulties you have been encountering with these pumps. Taco has always been a good company to work with and their pumps have been very dependable in the past on all of our boilers. I am sure that this will be corrected immediately if it has not been already. Thanks for your business and if you have any questions or concerns, feel free to contact me here or via e-mail. Hope this helps.

What ever happened to putting the pump closest to the least pressure on the feed side? Or did I retain some bad information?

Thanks to all for the input. Nice to hear from Burnham on this. Dana
  • Thanks, Rod

I didn't realize it was a Ventury System (VS)?
