The control was a Honeywell L8148E that was installed on a Slant-Fin 100 ( I think its a sentinel ? ).

The customer had been having problems intermitently and had a gas man previously replace his spark module. He thought this was the problem again and replaced it. When this did'nt work he called me.

When I got there I had 24 volts but nothing in the controls. I was able to jump out the flue damper , figuring it was the end switch. A couple of times during the week he wiggled the jumper and it fired back up, loose connecrtion right ?

My man replaced the flue damper and I got the call that night. No Heat.

After testing and calling Tim, who helped me go thru the intire control ( we were trying to get heat safly and get me home ) we found the relay was putting out 24 volts intermitently. After we had tested, jumped out the control, we still had no 24 volts at B1. Tim wondered if the clapper was pulling in and I said yes. Just to be sure I pushed it in and it fired. I checked B1 and had 24 volts. Suddenly the S8610U spark module started chattering and Tim told me to quickly check B1 again. I got a signal of 19/7.6/18.7 .... it was jumping all around.

Thats when we knew the relay was bad and sending out 24 sometime and other times not.

It gave the signs of a bad flue damper and more than likly burnt out the flue damper moter by running at lower voltage.

But somtime we had heat other times not.

As I said Tim stayed on the phone with me for an hour as he pulled out schematics at his office and had me test.

It was like having a pilot tell me how to fly the plan.

Scott

After teaching a class all day

This man stayed on the phone with me for over an hour while I diagnosed a intermitent problem with a primary control.

Turns out I had two problems one of which only showed up every other three calls for heat. She'd work fine and then not.

Tim patiently helped me thru the whole schematic and helped me test each circuit in the control to help diagnose the problem.

You are a great man Tim. Thank You !

    Primary control problem

We could all benefit if you tell us what was wrong and how you managed to fix it.

You know, I may have a boiler with that problem

I am going to keep it in mind when I look it over if the first steps taken don't fix the problem.
