Big steam job - ron jr .

There was 3 inch conduits for power all over the place - most of the ends were out of the connecters they fit into . The wood beams holding the ceiling and theater up looked like they would fall down from a loud enough movie . And someone repaired one of the return lines with 2 dresser couplings - using one to adapt from 1 1/2 to 1 1/4 , which of course leaked like a sieve . And they forgot to install a return trap - making a nice banging noise into the receiver .

We got it up and unning today , on the 4th day . It did get mighty cold in there . Thanks Bill .

  • We started this one yesterday

I was too tired to post anything on the 1st day . A not so old Weil Mclain 8 section 88 series . This was down in the basement of a movie theater in Babylon , Long Island . Talk about no room to work - not even enough room to bring the new one down till the old one was out . We had a contractor come to remove it - we wound up helping the 2 guys haul it out ( JCA - send me the name of a good back doctor ) . One of the pics is of the header piping - all screwed up in 4 inch . Another is of the condensate pump and receiver - some funky stuff going on in this basement . The last pic is the new Peerless 12 section LC in the basement in sections , and my partner Brian looking kinda woozy .
  • We busted **** on the first day

And managed to get out the whole boiler with the contractor - up an extended flight of stairs that turns 2 times . At around 2:30 the same day - with the help of a few other gracious installers , we finally were able to bring down a Peerless 12 section LC series boiler .

Oh yeah , they kept the movies going all day the 1st day - the manager had a sign outside that said the heat will be off . My partner went in lobby before we left and told me it wasnt too bad in there at all . Today though , a different story .

3 of us were back today . We got the boiler assembled and part of the header reconnected . 4 inch pipe and fittings get real heavy when youre installing em over your head .

That is some heavy duty work

I would have included some back braces for that job Ron.

No wonder your helper has that thousand yard stare.

Will you be doing a drop header on this one ?

By the way what was the movie , K2 ?

    Keep it up Ron.

    Scott

  • How did you guess , Scott ?

Yep , we used a drop header - much more easier to twin the header in that way . Had a slight problem with the clearance on the LWCO , but I squeezed it through . They were showing The 2 Towers and the new Martin Lawrence movie - but I dont think anyone wants to sit through Shananay in a 20 degree theater . Thanks alot Scott .

Yep , we used a drop header - much more easier to twin the 4 inch pipes to the boiler that way . Had a slight problem with the clearance on the LWCO , but I squeezed it through . They were showing The 2 Towers and the new Martin Lawrence movie - but I dont think anyone wants to sit through any movie in 20 degrees . We are hoping to have it running tomorrow . We still have to twin in the returns , connect the equalizer and return from the condensate pump , and all the odds and ends . Youll be real proud of me - itll all be in black pipe ( maybe ) . Thanks alot Scott .
  • Yeah , I was eyeballing that place today

Right across the street . But youre right , we had no time . My lunch was a coffee and small bag of Doritos . Sounds like you know the area good . Are you from around there ?

    Looking Good, Ron

I'm surprised we don't see more drop-headers, they're so much easier to install.

  • Oh Yeah

If that was the wrong boiler , Brain woulda went into Roid Rage for sure . We had to have moved over 10,000 lbs of iron , and he was on the handtruck for every new section and almost every old one .

PVC Pipe in commercial establishment, in NY

in LONG ISLAND no less? Amazing. I'm talking about the 2" or so drain line behind your nice new work.

Good luck working on that boiler in this weather on our island.

  • Those drop headers are a miracle

With the extra swing joints , its alot easier to twin in 2 headers . Speaking of drop headers - whats the limit on how far you can drop it ? I know I wouldn't want to drop one below the water line , but how far down can you go ?

    Not sure

but my educated guess would be about a foot above the waterline

    Not sure

but my educated guess would be about a foot above the top of the sight glass. All the drop header pics I have are at least that far up.

    Hey Ron

Once again great work. These type of jobs give me nighmares.Oh baby my back hurts just thinking of it.Craftsmanship and pride it is not dead.Keep it up my friend :)
  • Thanks Joe

Yes , these jobs are a nightmare . We had to go back today to repitch the header and add a return to a sagging part of 2 mains . If you dont take time and investigate what goes where , and how its pitched , youre gonna hear an awful lot of banging . Keep up the good work too Joe .
