Replacment Boiler Not Performing

I helped my brother-in-law replace a 30+ year old boiler in is 100+ year old house. The plumbing is hard to follow and well a mess. The boiler was piped to a wood boiler with 1 1/4 copper and then to two circulators. Not being a plumber by trade we just replaced the boiler and piped in the circulators. The house dosnt feel as warm as with the new boiler. Is it common pratice to put the circulators on the return. Does it matter? We also found a device that looks like a coupler, but it has a wingnut on the top; any idea what this is? From the boiler we used 1" copper to gather up the two zones, both are split loop. On the outlet side we do have also a single 1" pipe. I'm sure this could be an issue, but it worked with the old system (not always a good logic).

    I think

you should have a knowledgeable pro look over the system at this point. It's not just a matter of comfort, but also a matter of safety.

    Safety

    That is a good idea.

The new system is much safer than the old system. When we broke the other system down the firebox was full of soot and crap. You could smell the old furnace burning in the house. Replacing the boiler was was a matter of safety. And the old boiler was serviced annually!

    CO2

I have a detector. I feel much safer with the new boiler. I feel my problems are related to water flow. I have some seriously botched legacy plumbing. It dosnt make sense that the outlet is 3/4" pip and the 2 returns are 1". What a mess.

    Brian, you really need

some expert help on this, especially since you have a wood-fired boiler tied in. These have to be piped in with some extra-special care so they won't overheat the system and build too much pressure. Go to the Find a Contractor page of this site to locate a Wethead near you. You'll be glad you did!
