Plates

When settting up temperatures in a system for radiant plates under a floor, should I aim for similar temps as a slab? For instance when setting up a Tekmar 361 control it has pre-set transmission system curves for low mass radiant or high mass radiant. I've always thought to set plates the same as high mass radiant but am uncertain. Thanks in advance.

    Plates - DVW

Adding plates will increase the response time of radiant floor heat up three times faster than cold start staple-up and probably 25X faster than slab.

If you have slab and plates mixed, I would ask, "is the slab a basement or garage?" Then I would feel comfortable settingup the control for the plates since the basement heat loss changes very little and the garage - well - who cares if it's off by 3 or 4 degrees.

    Plates and digital Tekmar

Wayne- frankly I don't care for Tekmar's new no brain approach with their digital controls. I'm so used to choosing a curve. I have found that I have to use a low mass setting in order to get a curve high enough to deliver the heat for our plated jobs. We only do underfloor with Thermofin plates. However they still use a slightly higher curve than our Gypsum concrete jobs. Every job is different and that's why I wish I could set the curve instead of Option 1,2,3,4. I've had to return to jobs to reset the control because someone reset the emitter style on the control to match what was installed. I find that very confusing.

    Hey Troy

Thanks for the input. You just put your finger on my uncertainty. On top of it all I am designing a system and after I was all done designing for 3 radiant floors in slab, they told me thay need an extra zone for plates for a future wing. My initial response was to add a set of manifolds to the existing mixing loop, to save money but I may need a different curve for the plates. (which means more separte controls and more exspense.) I agree about the Tek Mar no brain menu. It took a little more thought to set the curve before but at least you had more control. WW
