New install, first Winter. Dropped to 3°F last night (design temps 10°) and I get the call that it's 64° in the house! Did I screw up? Stay tuned...........

HIt the limit
I think I just found the design limit for this old house. Funny, never thought to reverse calculate it before today. It hardly ever gets colder than a 25 degree night around these parts, never had a problem. Lastnight and today, it is very cold.
The all the rads are hot, the boiler is shutting down on pressure and comes on every now and then to bring the pressure back up. (.5 to 1.5)
Can't get the house over 64.
Well since this has not happened in the 8 years I've lived here we will just tuff it out. But another rad or two would not hurt.0 -
uh ohhh
Ya I've got those calls before they stink. Last night between -2 and -10 around here ans breezy. tuesday they say even colder and windier .Gotta love it. Iwent to work tuesday and basically worked till 6pm wensday night. fixing out boilers , broken pipes etc. had a construction crew open up the end of ahouse and just tack a blue tarp over the hole thinking that would cut it!!! even froze the cast iron heat pipes, they shattered (uggggggly) not to mention the plumbing.
on That house that didn't make it little things add up look for sticking dryer vents, worn door weatherstrip, poorly insulated knee walls on second floors leaky attic doors, extra recessed lights etc. These things will have major impact. i found all these problems in 1 house with what your describing. I pointed out how they not only effect the temperature but also the heat bill. We went from zero to hero in the home owners eye's. you can probably bumpour water temp a little as well or always add radiation but check the other stuff first!0 -
A similar call
The homeowners complained it was too cold when they woke up in the AM. Room temperature dropped back to 60 with the stat set at 70??? It maintained temperature fine all day, and was never running when I checked.
Turns out, after three calls to check and recheck the system, design, etc..... The homeowners were cracking a window at night! They like the cool fresh air and they sleep under a down comforter about a foot thick! Single digits outside and they have a window open, go figure. I'm surprised the room managed to stay 60!
