BSA Klondike 2003 (PAH)

Starting tomorrow night, we'll be camping out under the stars & right now it's snowing! My Troop is running the 2003 Klondike, our local winter camp. Guess what? This is the first time the youth, instead of the old farts, are running this event from start to finish!
The main BSA camp (Camp Tuckahoe) is closed for a camp-wide renovation & yours truly was the mechanical contractor chosen for the majority of the work - more on that in later months(G). Due to the camp being closed, we're relocating the Klondike to a York County Park.
As a result, this brings the Klondike closer to the Troops in our council & tonight we were given the current tally for attendance. Yikes! 500 people are signed up, which is twice the maximum number from any past Klondike.
I think the boys are up to the challenge. We'll give them any support they ask for, but tonight they told us old farts to sit back and let them keep on running the show. Tickles the snot out of me & I can't wait to see how well they do.

It's that time of year!
Our Klondike is this weekend also, at a scout camp just north of the Wis./ Ill. border. I've worked at the last 3 or 4 and each is a great experience. Enjoy and don't forget to drink lot's of water.

Dave
So I guess since camp Tuckahoe is closed you'll be staying at Camp Freezinass or will it be Camp Cantfeelyatoes.
Remember the older you get the thinner the blood. I should'nt laugh at 3 and 5, I've got a way to go before my boys get into this. A 60 year old guy camping in the snow is not funny .
Have a great time.
Scott

Here in Juneau, we go up to a pass located out of Skagway on the border between Canada and us. Troops come from Southeast Alaska riding the ferry, the rest come down from Whitehorse in the Yukon to build snow caves and compete in different skill areas. They had an article in Boys Life about us. Thanks to all who take the time to be involved in Scouting. YIS ****0 -
Significient statement here
"This is the first time the youth, instead of the old farts, are running this event from start to finish!"
Heard this once from a fellow who was amased the youth attended much more than they did at "ole farts" outings. Scouting is teaching leadership, liberty, and self reliance. If us "ole farts" take that away from the youth we get what is so prevelent today. i.e. youth that follow "no so good leaders" Thanks Dave, for spending the time at Wood Badge and then useing it to promote super Scouting!0 -
Yo, Dave
Have fun, winter camping is tough on us old dudes. My son is a webelos for 1 more month and then he's off to Troop. I have 5 months left as Cubmaster with our Pack and then I'm off to Troop to join him. I do like the part where the scouts run the show. I can't wait for that part!!0 -
I saw that story!
Is that on the railway pass? If so, we were there a few years ago! In fact, the last time our Troop ran the Klondike (we called it the Y2Klondike - remember the Y2K scare?) & based it on the Alaskan gold rush. This one is based on Donner Pass & the story of the Donner party - yumm, what's for dinner(G).

Take
New Leader Essentials & then go for Wood Badge - that's about a ten thousand dollar adult leadership course that you can get for "free" by giving up just the one hour a week being an adult leader takes - at least that's what they keep telling me the time will take(G).

The Army
just dropped off a water buffalo & I had to sign for any damage caused by freezing! I'm heading up to the park in a few minutes with self regulating heat tape braided cable to wrap the beast.

Dave, are you a Fox?
Oh no, I can't get the words to the song right. I assume you have the same song that each patrol sings about their patrol symbol? I enjoyed the rest of WoodBadge. A little time and a lot of teamwork.

A stinky Fox? (G)
No way, I'm an industrious Beaver.
Oh, I used to be a Beaver,
A good old Beaver too,
But now I'm finished....... (remember now?)
Just stopped in to get my "bed" and the ever perking coffee pot. Nothing like camp coffee. Wind chill tonight? -10 F & under a full moon with crunching snow underfoot. It doesn't get any better than this(G).
