Banging Burnham boiler
Mikes mad pipes
Member Posts: 15
Customer has banging boiler. I flushed it out and added silver king #5. It is still banging. The boiler has the circulator on the return 4 zone valves on return on upside down would this be the cause of the noise. Also who ever piped it didn't put any air eliminator on. I am going Back tomorrow to repipe boiler, moving circ. to pump away, add spiro, turn zone valves, any thing else I should look for. Thank for any info, Mike

Mike,
If that circulator is on upside down, then that is most definitely the cause of the banging. This is causing reverse flow through the boiler and is bringing cooler return water across the aquastat bulb while the pump is running. The result is that the burner is staying on WAY too long and an extreme overheat condition will exist at shut down. Get that pump running the right direction first.......from supply to return. Hope this helps.

I think he meant
that the zone valves are going against the flow of water ? If it sounds anything like what a globe valve sounds like when it closes against the flow backwards - it sure bangs like hell .0 -
I think the zone valves on backwards could be the cause. The zone valves could be designed to close against the flow of water. If another zone is calling to keep the pump running and the valve closes with the flow of water, it could be slamming shut. See what happen when repiped. Also, make sure that the system uses a pressurized expansion tank and not an overhead expansion tank before adding an air eliminator. Over time, air will be absorbed from the tank and released through the spirovent leaving the tank waterlogged. Tom M.0 -
Thanks Ron
I guess I misread his post a little.
