why?

Back in my college days, I lived in a fire station and covered night & weekend shifts. Being one of the smallest guys in the Dept, I almost always had the "privilege" of being sent into the crawl spaces and attics that nobody else could, or wanted, to fit into. "hey Zaichkin, I think there's a hot spot back there....".

Best Regards
DZ

    Why?

I have just returned from a service call(boiler down in appartment bld). why is it, or is there a law that there may only be one lighting fixture in the boiler room.and that fixture may only be 50 watts! when bringing in a drop light w/50' cord the outlet must be 110' from where you are working?? best of all with over 2K square ft of basement, why must the boiler be stuffed in the corner. maybe it was bad!
Am I the only this happens to?

    We have started

To tell our electrican to install a light above the new boiler install we do, also a plug on the wall.

Really, we were just talking about this. I mean how much can it add to the job.

    Let there be light!

Depending upon what state you're in, what county and what municipality....No law exists against installing as much light as you would like in PA, but no one does it.

Everyone just figures let the guy who has to work down there figure it out.

We always put a duplex receptacle and disconnect on new installs, it sure helps with this problem.

    Here's one of my favorites.

You plug your light in. then kill the power to heating system, only to find out it supplies power to the outlet you have just plugged your light into ERRRRR

I am a HO and just did an install in my crawl space/ basement WM oil fired boiler
When doing this I put a double receptacle above the boiler and wired the boiler and basement lights up to a generator/main hydro panel in the basement
That way the service guys can have light and use the outlet with the boiler power shut off. Have never had a boiler before and have only once seen a service guy doing his thing at my Dads house, and it seemed like common sence to me to have lots of light and outlets handy to the boiler.
PS: also painted the walls white to give more light from the ceiling bulbs.
  • One of our

best sellers is 150W light bulbs. Put them in in place of the 25W bulbs all property management companies use. Never had anyone refuse to pay.

    Quike thriller

went on a service call with a guy and it was very dark we had to travel a long way in to this building. The boiler was in a pit. we had a flash light with very low batts. as we stuped to check out the no heat call a hand came out of an old small window opening and grabed the guy I was with on the shoulder as the hand said roooor. This gut jumped out of one of his shoes. I jumped and hit my head on a pipe and cut it open. not bad. The hand belonged to a freind who knew we were going to the location and beat us there. Morrel of story always have a brite light.

    OR THE.....

Recepticle is so warn out that evry time you plug your light in it falls out, then you spend 20 min. tring to bend the prongs on your cord to fit and stay in. and to add insult to injury, the homeowner just stands there as quiet as a drug store cigar holding indian, while your holding your breath to keep from saying that one word.@#!#*@! you really want to say.

    Lights

A few years ago went to a jobsite with an old timer. Walked (should say crouched) into a dark hole and the guy reached up pulled a chain and we were bathed in beautiful light. He had installed a double socket box and hung a 4ft flourescent light. I complimented him an a great idea for this dark hole and he said he had done it all his jobs for years. At the end of the job he asked the homeowner if he wanted to keep the light if they did he charged them what he paid for the fixture. He said he only had one customer over the years not want to pay - he left it anyhow cause it made working on the equipment so much easier.

    NEC2002 FYI

    Gentlemen,

The following are excerpts taken from the National Electrical Code Book:

    BASEMENTS & ATTICS:

210-52g: At least one receptacle outlet is provided in unfinished basement areas in addition to any receptacles installed for laundry equipment

210-63: 125 volt single phase 15 or 20 amp rated receptacle outlet shall be installed at an accessibile location for the servicing of heating, air conditioning and refrigeration equipment. The receptacle shall be located on the same level and within 25ft of said equipment. The receptacle outlet shall not be connected to the load side of the equipment disconnecting means.

210-8: GFCI protection is provided for receptacles in unfinished portions of basements (other than receptacles for laundry, pumps, or specific appliances).

422-12: Individual branch circuits are supplied for central heating equipment.

210-70(a)(3): A wall switch controlled lighting outlet or a lighting outlet containing a switch is provided at the entrance to equipment requiring service.

336-6(d), 333-12: Check accessible attics, attic entrances and scuttle holes for clearances from or protection of cable assemblies.
  • why also

does there have to be oil on the floor in front of the boiler and why does someone always clean the base of the chimney by scraping the soot onto the floor? Why do they dump the soot vac and old filter element somewhere where I have to work in the future? Why do I like this job anyway?
I will admit that if the tenent or homeowner gives me crap I might unplug the spare refrigerator, plug in my lite, oops, sorry your beer is hot!
