I too have used many of the Taco 3-wire zone valves without problems including three in my own house. They are not being replaced by the ESP are they? I hope that they will continue to be available.

    another failed zone valve

I have insatlled about 30 of the Taco ESP zone valves, and I just came back from a call where I had another one fail open. This brings to the total number of failures on these valves, to about 10. The date codes are old and new, this latest failure, was labled 05-02. I am installing them according to the bright green label on the box. I knew there were some problems in the past, but I thought by following the "new" directions, I would be ok. I never had any problems with the old 3 wire series of zone valves. And what to I gain with the ESP, a response from the system about 1 1/2 minutes faster. The experiance with these Taco zone valves has forced me to make the choice, every job gets circulators. Sorry Taco, but I will never buy another ESP zone valve, and will be heading to the trash can with the ones I have left in my shop.

  • Same failure ratio for me

Did a job when the ESP first came out , and one of the 3 we used failed in the open position . Another crew of ours used 5 on one job , and 2 were broken on install .

    Danfoss ZVs

    Chuck,

Give these Danfoss ZVs a chance. I am extremely happy with them. It is the first zone valve in 20 years that I actually have no compunction in using. Having seen them all, this is my choice. Besides, with Robert Bean on your side, what can go wrong? ;-)

do you have a part number for those? Are they a union style mount? They look nice. The heads look like Wirsbo's thermal actuators.

There is great story behind this zone valve....

My first experience battling big corporate politics came as a result of obtaining this actuator for our valve bodies for a local customer and freind. Our standard model comes without end switch...but our buddy needed end switches so...

It was 1999 and I had just sold my company to Danfoss...and was off shopping for the ultimate hand made custom fit sleeping bag ((-40 deg f rating) which incidentally saved my life.... another story.... Bruce if you're reading.... THANK YOU). Anyways, no sooner had I entered the Integral Design show room when a young lovely lady approached me with an extended hand offering a cup of cappuccino (don't ask how they knew I wanted a cup of java...it was fresh and ready) What can we do for you sir? Sir?...I was still under 40 and she called me sir!

After specifying my needs for extreme gear she asked me to lay down on the floor mats for a measurement. It took maybe 45 seconds at the most. Mr. Bean your sleeping bag will be ready in ten days. Guess what...5 days later...Mr. Bean your bag is ready (chuckle chuckle on the other end)...why don't you come on down for a coffee and try it out?

By far the best example of customer service I have ever experienced. Custom made in ten days ready in five...under promise - over deliver always! Reminds me of the self serve station with the gas attendants...no wonder they do ten times as much business as the guy across the street.

Anyhow...long story short...it took two weeks just to complete the paper work for the actuators and another two weeks to get them in! What's wrong with this picture? Standard item off the shelf in four weeks...custom made in five days...our guys in Calgary (me in particular) was having it out with the 'powers to be' when one of my favorite quotes leaped from my brain ... " a man beaten down by an opponent can get up, a man beaten down by conformity stays down." Being the non-conformist rebel that I am...I use this example of what customer service should be. We're far from perfect...heck we fail and learn like everybody else but our group of bandits will fight to do what it takes to get the job done. What's the lesson...both products are of the highest quality one saved my life the other saves head and heart aches in a heating system. I still, and always love my Danfoss even though the four weeks to get the actuators was a pain in the rear...but well worth the wait to get them and others into the system...and today...we still have our jobs and a three year old battle scar but we fought hard to get those infamous actuators into our inventory system which means they can be in your hydronic systems...and you don't have to put your job on the line!

If you're like Steve Ebels without a distributor to buy from let us know and we'll be happy to arrange the sale and support through the closest Danfoss distributor.

Want the literature on all our zone valves?

Let me know your email address and we'll mail you out the PDF file.

In the corporate world we keep our heads down, beg forgiveness often and stay loyal to the most important person in the world...the customer.

  • Robert Bean if possible

I would like to add the Danfoss ZV's to my display of hydronic conrols in our training center. Would also like some originals on installation and service literature to include in our Hydronics Controls Manual. Last of all we will if able to receive the above include them in our discussion of Zone Valves in our Hydronics Course. I have been meaning to get in touch with someone about this for a while.

In addition my son is building a new home forced hot water with a mix of radiant, hydro air and with indirect hot water. We plan on zoning this system. Do you have a pre fab manifold for use with ZV's?
  • Taco ESP

I'm no stranger to the problems Taco had; we had to deal with a few of the defective zone valves and I believed them when they said the problem was taken care of. Perhaps they need some more time.

In the mean time, I plan to buy some of the Danfoss zone valves; they seem like an excellent product along with all the other Danfoss equipment.

    Alan, I agree with you...

...we'd all be pullin' wool over our eyes if we were perfect...I know the folks over at Taco and they're top notch all the way...they'll take care of their customers...they always do...they always did when I was the rep.

How's that revamped system working these days...last time we talked I don't recall if it had been under a winter load...see you at RPA eh?
