Problem with Spirovent

I had drained my boiler down to do some work on it and
when I started filling the boiler back up, the spirovent
began shooting water out instead of air. I couldn't get it
to stop, so I capped it off, refilled the boiler and fired
it back up. I then removed the cap off of the spirovent
and there was no more water shooting out. Has anyone had
this problem? I'm not sure as to whether I should replace
it or not. I haven't heard any air coming out of it and I'm
really not sure if it working. Thanks in advance,
Mike Lampkin

The spirovent will not work without some pressure against it, when you drain the boiler it will actually allow air into the system after the pressure drops to zero. You may have also pulled some small amount of debris into the valve during the draining process. They are very easy to clean, just screw the top off and check and clean the valve.

    first

one I installed, my stomach dropped. Then I found out it's normal upon initial filling.

    Happy venting!

    Spirovent Trick

Mike, We had that problem with the first one we did. Since all circulators we put in are installed pumping away, I will come off the boiler supply to a tee which i make the point of no pressure change. I pipe the expansion tank and the pressure reducing valve to this tee with isolation valves. Then the spirovent will go after that tee, and then to the primary circulator or system circulators or whatever my paticular design is. When that piping arrangement is followed, you will not ever see water discharge from the vent. I install alot of Munchkin boilers so i usually install a boiler drain in the bottom of the spirovent to use as the lowest point drain or in other boiler applications i use a brass plug.

    Darin, please educate me more,

Why would your particular arangement prevent water from coming out of the vent? We have installed plenty of Spirovents with the tank and feed on the Spirovent and never had a problem. Also have seen a Spirovent leak after a drain down ,repair, and system refill with a piping arangement closer to yours. Just curious.

    Does it make a difference.....

When filling a boiler, would it make a difference, on whether
the make-up water entered from the bottom or from the end of the spirovent?
    Thanks, Mike Lampkin
