Water Hammering

I live in an old apartment building in Boston (South Brighton) which is heated by steam radiators. Last year, my wife and I enjoyed good heating, occasionally having a popping sound coming from the radiators. This year, the cracking from the water hammering has grown to an unbearable volume level, such that we can not sleep at night when the system turns on. My landlord sent two different people from the same plumbing company, but they couldn't figure it out. Today, their "top guy" is coming in. I have educated myself a little bit thanks to your great website, and I think perhaps the problem is the steam traps. What does everyone think?

Could be the steam traps, as you suspect,
or it be something else. Let us know what the top guy has to say. Thanks.Retired and loving it.0
