Honeywell reset switch keeps tripping

I appreciate your input and know that I can soak the box by pressing the reset more than once --- as I stated, I only need to press it once and the thing runs like a charm -- is it possible that the Honeywell unit is defective?

    Honeywell safety switch keeps triggering

    Hello,
I have a 5 year old hydrotherm boiler (cold start - separate hot water heater) with a beckett burner - in my unheated uninsulated garage. The nozzle (.75 Hollow as per specs)and the electrodes are new as is the filter and eye. The pump is original running at 140 PSI and I do not have a smoke problem. The transformer and the Honeywell safety are also original. Additionally, I have an 8" exhaust (elbow to elbow to straight pipe to the chimney (which is old and the clay at the bottom is somewhat disintegrated - 8" square if not bigger - I believe I have proper draft (tested it by burning piece of paper - smoke sucked right out)).
I have also opened up the peep hole to look in the firebox and the backpressure is strong -- It will burn your face if you stay there for a relatively short period of time. I cleaned the boiler with a brush and vacuum however could not clean the base of the firebox. Although I still have pressure that is not my biggest problem.

The safety cuts off intermittently. Usually at night but the outside temperature does not seem to matter (it was in the 40's last week and it cut off and the 20's two nights ago and it cut off - last night 20's and it worked all night). When I reset it, it kicks right back on and runs like a charm.

It has been a cold winter thus far in the northeast and this is getting stupid --- ANY SUGGESTIONS? HELP!!!
    Thanks

    Tripping safety

I think you are referring to your oil primary control. That is a safety device that functions when something in the system is not working correctly. PLEASE DO NOT push that reset button more than once!!!! If you continue to press the reset, you will saturate the firebox with oil, leading to even more serious problems. Oil burners must be serviced by qualified technicians, they are not a do it yourself project. Please call your oil heat service company immediately, or use the "Find A Contractor" feature above.

    Have You

ever changed the oil filter or the pump strainer or the nozzle? Has the burner ever been properly adjusted with a combustion analyzer ? Smoke up the chimney from a burning piece of paper will not tell you if you have the correct draft. Normally .02 in. WC over fire and .04 in the breech. You may be a capable person but w/o the proper tools and training it is difficult to get it right. The cad cell lock out is usually a symptom and not the cause , not always any way, but it depends.......

    could also be

a bad motor, plugged oil line, weak ignitor. You have to catch it in the act. Like if it locks out trying to start or during a run cycle or during ignition cycle. If their is a vacuum leak in the oil line the other oil appliance might be "stealing' the oil. Way too many variables or on the other hand it could be the control

    reset tripping.

I had a similar problem in two different houses, two different systems. Call the Pro. I was able to take care of all the problems after watching the tech do his thing (and I asked a ton of questions). My latest problem was that the oil filter at the pump was clogged. This was about 3 months after the service. Turns out my top fed oil tank had about 4 inches of congealed oil at the bottom, my feed tube 3/8" tubing was actually on the bottom (my fault entirely). I spent about an hour on a sub-zero night in the garage (with no heat) cleaning that filter the best I could. I reinstalled and the burner worked without a hickup until the tech got there two days later with a new filter (no, I did not just go buy a new one because I wanted the tech to check what I did).

The bottom line is that I try to let the knowledgable people do what they know best. I learn what to look for so I can make temp repairs in a pinch that I know I can make without harming my family.
