expansion tanks

steel exp tanks should be drained every year sorry only thing that seems to work and not cause air to move out into the system has to do with heat rising and cold falling in the line hooked to the tank causing waterlogged condition you cant tell by tapping we drain every year needed or not drop pressure to 0 on system to ck bladder tanks as far as i am concerned if it has lost air pressure you will have problems [thats why you are there right] do it now or at 3am your choice by the way...leave that feeder wide open? hope that relief reseats read the literature with a prv

what indications would show if a expansion tank was bad besides tapping on it to tell if its waterlogged or not?

    You will

get periodic water from the relief valve (water on the floor) and your boiler will be running at a much higher pressure.

    If it's a bladder type

push in the valve stem on the bottom. Water or air??

    Expansion Tanks

I been told that if you drop the pressure in the boiler to zero. You can test the extrol tank with a tire air gauge if its less than 12 lbs its no good.

    E- tank

You can test tank pressure by dropping boiler press. to zero. Diaphram tanks will lose press. through the diaphram over time. A drop in pressure does NOT necessarily mean it is no good. Simply add air to tank, if it holds your OK, if not replace it.

    bladder tank good or bad

I was always under the impression that if a bladder tank was bad that you would find the air side of the tank waterlogged. Is this right or wrong thinking?

    Solution to that

is the Bell & Gossett Airtrol Tank Fitting, a amazing little device.

if there is H2O on the air side it is BAD. BUT if the pressure is not there and there is NO water, you can "RECHARGE" it w/ air
