I'm wondering about the feasibility of
the following: I have a 1.5 story home,
2,000 sq ft down, maybe 500, one bed, one
bath, utility areas.
Inadquate furnace in crawl space.Would
like to put one central unit upstairs
that would heat and cool in upstairs
and downstairs zones.

Why not
set up your existing ductwork for cooling only, and install radiant or cast-iron-baseboard hot-water for your heat? With a setup like this you can zone each individual room if you want. Even fin-tube (as opposed to cast-iron) baseboard would give you much better comfort than scorched-air ever will, and will use less energy.
