Noisy boiler

I have a customer with a Weil Mclain CG-6 boiler. It has started to make a pingingpopping noise at about one half way through each heating cycle. The boiler has been in use for about 10 years and just started this noise about three weeks ago. It is clean and free of sludge or sediment, the pressure is correct and water flow appears to be good. Gas manifold pressure is correct and there is no air in the system. If you hold any of the pipes near the boiler you can actualy feel the banging in the pipes. This is starting to drive this woman crazy and myself not far behind, any thoughts would be appreciated.

boiler popping
Is the noise coming from the burner or the boiler. I have heard water heater tanks do this because of sediment build up at the bottom of the tank. It sounds like a bunch of marbles rolling around inside. I have never had much success getting rid of the sediment. The sediment can't be detected when draining the tank because it doesn't drain off. I have never had this problem with a boiler though.0 -
That is the type of noise we are hearing but there is no sign of sediment in the boiler, I am with you here I have seen this in water heaters without seeing what caused it but in 35 years of service work have not seen this in a boiler where I could not see what caused it.

noisy boiler
most likely this is caused by lime scale build up in the block. Does the guage needle pulsate while the circulator & burner are running?0 -
No, there is no pulsation or variation at all. That is part of what is so puzzling about it, that and the fact that it started suddenly. The guy was in the basement working when it started to do it, he said he had been sown there for about two hours and the boiler had gone through about three cycles and then in the middle of a cycle it started making noise.0 -
noise
Are there any globe valves installed in this system?Maybe a rubber washer is blocking the flow.

sedement
Sometimes the water can be clear at the drain, and still have sedement in the boiler itself. It sets up like concrete in some instances.
