As so many of you have done, I wish to share a part of my life with all of you and in some way help with the grief.
My dog Ruby of thirteen years has been getting sicker and last Thursday we had to bring her to the pet Hospital. We were told she had a tumor on her spleen and a very low red blood cell count. They felt that with some medication she could stop her own body from attacking her bloe cells.
She stayed at the hospital for four days and came home Monday. We knew we did'nt have long but wanted her with us for a little while longer and for her to be at home and comfortable.
New Years Eve my wife came to bed cring and took some blankets and pillows down stairs. She said Ruby could'nt get up on the coach and was breathing hard. Around four she woke me up and said she could'nt take it anymore. Ruby was coughing and could'nt lay down.
I drove into Boston at five in the morning to Angell Memorial Vet. Hospital where the vet on call told me she had too many cards stcked against her and I should call my wife. Besty drove into to town where we decided we did'nt want her to suffer.
With tears in our eyes we held our loved friend of thriten years while the vet gave her the shot. My wife asked for some towles to lay her head on and we let her go.
Those of you who love pets know who hard this was. I am getting my keyboard wet as I write this.
I found Ruby at Christmas time and she left at Christmas. She was our first "child" and was in our wedding. Travel on vacation with us, camping, sailing, cross country skiing, everything.
Ruby was a foxhound, they look like a very big beagle. She was born at a hunt club that did'nt want the puppiew and was destroyng them as they were born. A friend of mine picked her out of the dirt and fed her with an eye dropper for three weeks while she slep on a heating pad. She was nver in a litter or weaned by her mother. When she came to us We were her pack. She slept on the bed with us right up against us. She was 90 lbs. Do you think thats love to put up with that ? :).
When we got home from the hospital new years day we told my 5 year old son that Ruby was sick and had to go to the hospital. " when will she come home ? " " She wont pal" I said. I told him to remember the movie he saw, All Dogs go To Heavon. " Thast where Ruby is know ". He looked at me and said I did'nt get a chance to say goodbye.
I know some will think it odd that a fourty five year ol guy could be this broken up, but this is killing my wife and I.
We did the right thing. And NO dog ever had a better life.
My friends use to say that when they die they want to come back as our dog.
I hope she is running on a beach some where.
Good bye girl.
