Need a new steam boiler

After only 12 years, our Weil McLain steam boiler needs to be replaced. I am told we need a 262,000 BTU replacement. We have been quoted for another Weil McLain and a Peerless. The prices are quite different. Can you suggest which brand is considered better?

    I would first

find a contractor that really knows steam and then let that contractor select the boiler.

Did the quoting contractors measure your radiators to come up with that boiler size?

The contractors we have spoken to only carry certain brands.

Both companies have worked with steam boilers before. The first company didn't measure the radiators and quoted us the Peerless. The second company measured the radiators and quoted us a Weil McLain. The Peerless was quoted at $2000 less than the Weil McLain. Should we just go on price? Are there some sort of industry certifications for steam boiler technicans which we should look for? Thanks.

Peerless and Weil Mc Lain are both very good boilers and

close in price..the price difference is almost certainly due to who is going to do the better job for you. The man who measured up your rads first is the man to go with....ask for references (steam boiler refernces)from the past few years...you'll find out who the real steam man is. By going with the cheaper qoute, you could end up with a job like exhibit A - a BAD installation that has never worked right (and they can't get the original guy back!!!!). Exhibit B is the right job, by a man who knows and respects Steam. good luck Mad Dog
