"It Depends" Cowie, There are many different types of pressure switches. Water Pressure, Air Pressure , Normally open and Normally closed.

A pressure switch
is a contraption (AKA a device) that is sensitive to pressure. When it detects that pressure, it either opens or closes a set of electrical contacts that allows another contraption to turn on or shut off.
