What is the best way to pipe a zone of hydronic heat in the basement off a steam boiler. I have had problems in the past with water boiling in the baseboard.

By pass
Try a by-pass between return and supply, balance the temp. that way.
Dan expalins it very well(with diagram)in heating Q&A.

Excellent results with h2o off of steam
I recently put an addition onto my house (1937 one-pipe steam) and added a hot water zone to the boiler. Used the heat exchanger method, and it really works nicely. I liked the idea that the two systems would be isolated. Used a small multiplate heat exchanger (takes up surprisingly little space) and haven't had any problems since installation (over a year.) I still like steam better, though...
This site is a wonderful resource- I relied on the wisdom of Dan H and the posters to guide me through this process and the replacement of my old boiler (went belly-up right before adding the HW zone, so I didn't have to install it on the old one and redo it on the new one...)0
