Silverking

Have been having several recurring problems (all on hot water systems, no steam.
1. Have been installing manifolds with built-in flow meters. This is great, but the inside of the glass on the meters often gets dirty in a short time, making them impossible to read. Have been cleaning systems on start up by simply operating at temp for a while and flushing. Maybe I should be running TSP for a while, then flushing. But then, it is inevitable some corrosion will occur and water will get mucky (at least on cast iron boilers). How much would Silver King No 5 work in keeping things clear.

2. Zone valves and thermostatic radiator valves stick too often for my taste. Have heard silver king is great here. What is real world experience.

3. Wet rotor circulators stick too often for my taste. Have gone the circle grundfos to B & G T to taco and back to Grundfos, etc about three times. Am currently getting fed up with Taco. Would Silver King help the situation?

Final question re Silver King: Will it gum up air vents?

Would appreciate input on these questions.

Thanks,

Bill

    Chemicals

Bill, I use Chem Aqua CB93 system cleaner to remove residues and precipitates, than flush after 3 days. I refill and flush, than use CB777 corrosion inhibitor and pump lubricant. It has phenothalien as a coloring, so if you ever see red, you know it's from the hydronic system. The CB93 removes the residues in the flow meters, as well.

    Cleaning systems,new & old

The container on the left is what I cleaned out of a brand new, out of the crate boiler. I ran the boiler in the shop with just an expansion tank and a pex jumper, from the pump to the return. I ran it a 180 for a few hours.

As you can see, there is about a 1/4" of sludge in the bottom of the container. This all came from the boiler only. The cleaner I use cleans, locks up sludge, and lays a film on the surface of the boiler to prevent future rust and corossion. The second step is a conditioner to scavange the remaining O2, buffer the PH and assure the film providers are working. Money well spent to assure good heat transfer and long component life.

The container on the right is a 14 year old solar roll/ copper tube system I recently flushed. I flushed, probably 50 gallons of this from the system before it started to run clear. Left un checked some of the old solar roll jobs will completely sludge to the point of no return. Like concrete in the lines!

Can't inagine it's good for the pumps or boiler HX surfaces.

Good idea to clean and treat ALL systems. Especially the brand new ones :)
