My Oil Fill is leaking

I got an oil delivery last week and I noticed a leak on the fill pipe coming into the house. It seems to be at a 2 inch copper elbow. Why the builder decided to use copper is a mystery. I have asked my oil company to repair it they told me that they would have to replace it with iron pipe. The service man said it would be dangeous to resoder the elbow that the oil could ignite. Another service man told me it wouldn't be a problem they do it all the time. I don't who to believe.

    OIL FILL

GO WITH THE IRON PIPE AS TO CODE [AT LEAST IN OUR AREA] ALSO MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A SWING JOINT

    The first thing

I would do, is check with the local code officials. For an oil burner it is usually the fire department. They should have the final say. I would recomend going with black iron. Include a swing joint, if there is ever any settling, the iron pipe, which is threaded, will have some movement. This is probally what caused the copper joint to break in the first place.

I just found out that in my area CT, or RI you can use copper but per the IMC code book it has to be brazed not soldered, however I would agree to using black iron for all tank jobs!! I still see a little bit of wetness after delivery on the supply side, we have time and time again re-doped the pipe so this may be seen I would not worry about that. Good Luck
  • what we do..

Is after piping with the black iron (with swings of course) is to clean all excess oil and pipe dope from pipes and throw on a couple of coats of oil base paint on all piping ,including what is sleeved through wall and on outside of house (color coordinate of course)have not had any weeping joints since !!
