Expansion tanks

I have an oil fired hydronic system that keeps popping the relief vavle. I mistakenly assumed that the valve was bad and replaced it. You guesses it....it still leaks. There is an overhead expansion tank and i fear its waterlogged but i am not sure what to do with it. It is an plain old tank not the new diaphram type. I was told just isolate the tank and drain it completely than reopen the vavle to the system.

    Yup

That will replenish your "air cushion" in the e-tank. This is something you will have to do periodically.

    Air management vs air removal

Did anyone add any automatic air vents or any other changes to system?

    older than that....

The system was put in in the late 50's! Its all original except for a new circ pump and last year I put in a new auto fill and added a backflow preventer after my brother "bled" the air not to mention almost all of the water out! 40 some odd years later it still looks like it was installed yesterday. my dad was obsessive about cleaning it inside and out and maintaining it. The oil guy even took pictures of it last year!

Good call on the air vents. I just learned that myself.

    Hey Pete

Did your dad ever have to tend to the e-tank?
