Expansion tanks

I have an oil fired hydronic system that keeps popping the relief vavle. I mistakenly assumed that the valve was bad and replaced it. You guesses it....it still leaks. There is an overhead expansion tank and i fear its waterlogged but i am not sure what to do with it. It is an plain old tank not the new diaphram type. I was told just isolate the tank and drain it completely than reopen the vavle to the system.

Yup
That will replenish your "air cushion" in the e-tank. This is something you will have to do periodically.0 -
haha
Well than Im about 20 years overdue!0 -
hmmmm
so thats the proper proceedure.....should I do it hot or cold or does it matter? Its actually my Moms house and Im sure its had no TLC since my Dad died. He was the expert at these things!0 -
sounds like ....
It works for your system . O.K. , fess up ....how many of us have seen a diaphram tank last 20 years ?
I've only been at the game for 18 but still haven't seen 1 go that long .0 -
Air management vs air removal
Did anyone add any automatic air vents or any other changes to system?0 -
older than that....
The system was put in in the late 50's! Its all original except for a new circ pump and last year I put in a new auto fill and added a backflow preventer after my brother "bled" the air not to mention almost all of the water out! 40 some odd years later it still looks like it was installed yesterday. my dad was obsessive about cleaning it inside and out and maintaining it. The oil guy even took pictures of it last year!0 -
Eric
Good call on the air vents. I just learned that myself.0 -
Hey Pete
Did your dad ever have to tend to the e-tank?0 -
Im sure he did but its been a few years since he passed and he wasnt too sharp the last couple so even if he did its been a while.0
