Test Data on Indirect Hot Water Tanks

Perhaps this subject is better left for Siggy or Dan, however, does anyone know the most efficient indirect hot water tank on the market? All manufacturers claim to be the best. Iam in need of a 30/40 gallon (buffer) tank and can't seem to locate any published evaluations of the common tanks around. Is it SuperStor, BoilerMate (Amtrol), Weil-McLain, Iam more concerned with its efficiency. Is there an independent test lab that evaluates? Such as IBR does? All responses are appreciated

    Tank efficiency

There are two measures of efficiency, one is the tank loss in BTU per hour or loss in temperature. The second is the heat exchanger capability which can be determined by the output( continuous) of the heat exchanger using the same input. Remember that the output that is greater than the input of the boiler is probably wasted unless there is a fouling of the heat exchanger in time which is unlikely in a buffer tank.

    A tube in a tank

Is a tube in a tank.

I would compare heat exchanger area vs. water content from one tank to another to get an idea of recovery. I'm sure that, and turbulence determine the efficiency you're after. And of course what Roger said about insulation.

From what I've seen, it seems that recovery rates and outputs vs inputs are usually only available in the installation manuals, but not the glossies. Maybe that's changed, I dunno. That'd probably be the most practical way to compare.
