Milk may be what it needs
The computer company that services my equipment just left. We are going to up grade from Windows ME (lots of problems ) to Windows XP along with increasing our RAM.
For others who may have a similar problem I lost my cookies and also my ability to bookmark and can not download all attachements to e-mail. There are also several other minor deficiencies that showed up. This is inherent with ME and XP will supposdly solve this problem. We are also putting in new FAX, Copy Machine and scanner equipment. I hopefully will be able to send some neat stuff on gas troubleshooting when we are all done. I wonder if Bill Gates ever has these problems.0 -
Bill Gates has been there!
During a meeting unvailing a new software package, Bill was doing a Powerpoint presentation and his laptop locked up. Had to reboot!
Yep - there is justice to be found!!!0 -
XP - good choice
ME had such inherant problems. Since going to XP - I have been problem free. GOOD CHOICE !

I have had ME
for quite a while now with no problems.
When would they start showing up and is it very complicated to upgrade?0 -
Windows ME
I have had it since it first came out, I think about two years or so ago. This problem just started about a month ago. I thought it was caused by my computer security systems but the computer guru's tell me no that it is inherent with ME for problems to arise.
They are going to get back to me on a price for the upgrade. I just went and priced it at Office Max and they want $99.00 for the upgrade (home version). The only thing they warn against is that some of your older software may not be compatible with XP. From what I understand (my knowledge of these things is limited believe me)is that XP is not a DOS based operating system. So any software older lets say than 1998 may not be compatible.
Most up grades today are very easy to install you just pop the CD in and follow the directions (I guess what is called user friendly) in my case it is probably UPGRADE FOR DUMMIES.0 -
I would appreciate
an update after you complete being the guinea pig Tim.
I have also had ME since it came out and am concerned after reading your post. I previously had Windows 95 with no problems. When I changed hardware the "expert" added the hard drive from the old computer to the new one and I was able to down load all my programs into ME. I have since removed the old drive and installed an internal CDRW drive.
I have noticed, in the last couple of days, that two programs that were on my system can no longer be found: Links golf (I am just as bad on the computer) and power point. Are these the type of problems that start croping up?
Have you allowed Microsoft to do their periodic updates?
Have you check to see if the upgrade is available on line through Microsoft?
Good luck.0 -
ME vs XP
Timmie,
I have 3 networked on ME, since it came out, no problems. Looked at XP... it's to busy, seems cluttered,
and I still have an accounting program in DOS.
Yes to more RAM...
al
ps. I still have a '79 service truck and a '46 boiler....Happy Holidays0 -
running older progs on XP
XP has a accessory prog called windows compatabilty. This prog will allow XP to recognise the older software. so no worries there.
If you have an older prog that XP cant recognize - just run the above mentioned prog & follow prompts.

Timmie...
If you got this message , you passed .
I upgraded to XP about 6 months ago and the only problem I've encountered was VIRUS related . Broke down and got the newest Norton (best money spent, other than training this year) with 0 problems . My brother works for a local pile of hospitals doing their sharing systems , and that REALLY helps . If a problem arises , one panic phone call or email usually gets me service quick and cheap . Of course the reverse is also true , I get to drive 30 miles to fix his heat at the drop of a hat ! Welcome to the 2000's . Chris . You really didn't have to loose your cookies over it !0 -
Computers
My computer guy ran all the updates for me on several different programs. The problem was not solved. His solution is to go to XP. I have done some checking around and found out that it is a good move to go to XP. ME was a sort of fill in for Microsoft to stay active in the marketplace while they talked to the government.
I also just found out that there is a program you can use to up grade your old programs to XP.
I was also advised to switch my security program from McAfee to Norton Utilities. I had Norton on my old systems and really liked it I think I am going back after McAfee subscrition runs out.
My basic problem was not losing programs but different functions in the programs themselves. Rebooting the softwatre did not help as the operating system (ME) was the problem.
I will obviously keep everyone posted.0
